Hi all, This is my 1st post.
I Have just purchased an 01 R1150GS (ABS), 57,000 miles & absolutely love it.
Just wondering, I have been using super unleaded fuel at the mo, but I am interested to know what other owners use. IE Is it really neccessary to use super or will std 95 RON unleaded be fine ?

Thanks in advance for all replies.
Paul.

...... but super is better, why else would they call it that? :hide:

Only, in this instance, to take more money off you.

Agothaclypse, your bike should have a sticker around the tank filler specifying 95 RON fuel.

Unlike later models, these bikes do not have an anti-knock sensor so there is absolutely no advantage in using super-unleaded fuel.

Hi,welcome.
The little handbook says minimum 95 octane (Ron) or 85 octane (mon),whatever that is.
Mind you, once when i put the 98 ron stuff in,the bike seemed a bit perkier.
Just costs more.

I wasn't the original poster - DOH!

I use the higher octane rating whenever I can. On a Europe trip most fuel outlets have it, and I've found the bike runs just a tad more smoothly, picks up a little more quickly, and over a prolonged period does more MPG.

I accept there is 'no need' for it cos the bike will run fine on the 95, but the 98 does help. I've also found my bike ( Y piece and Remus) backfires a lot less on the higher octane fuel. Have absolutely no idea why, just does.

It's a low tuned tractor of an engine....95 ron bog standard fuel will be fine.

Anything else is probably emporer's new clothes IMO.......I've yet to see empirical evidence that says otherwise....my seat-of-pants performance guages can't detect the slightest difference apart from the damage to my wallet :)

Theres me thinking that the GS was designed to go around the world, sometimes in places where 95RON was not available:nenau

I ran mine on 85RON (and probably lower) fuel for extended periods - no problems.

RE: 98RON and above - I think it depends on the state of tune of the individual bike - some notice no difference whatsoever - so it's a waste of money for them. Mine is smoother on the expensive stuff, and I get more miles to the tank so it works out the same cost-wise. The bike is designed to run on 95 though so there is no need to use higher.

Fuel

i have run my 1150 on fuel as low as 83 octain in the usa, and regualy on about 88-90 as this is what's available. Thanks to the old motronic no pinking or other probs, just a bit down on power, same at 14000 ft. (mount evans colarado) and ticks over the same as at sea level. You will find that in germany the fuel 95 is called super and i think is all in the mind that 97 is any better having tried it.

Thanks All

Thanks 2 all for your replies,
Think I will switch to std unleaded 95 RON & see how I go.
