On a run at the weekend started running really rough and going through fuel like nobody's business. Cleared after a while and then started again after 40 or so miles. Refuelled and made no difference so ended up getting recovered to home.
I initially thought it might be a damp problem but bike is now dry and still has the problem. Will start OK but runs like a bag of nails and loses power. Also stinks of petrol fumes.
I've checked the plugs and coils and they visually appear OK.
I've got a Power Commander V fitted and so I disconnected this and refitted the exhaust sensors but made no difference.
Is it likely to be a faulty coil, a faulty fuel injector, or something else entirely?
Any help and advice greatly appreciated.

You need it on a gs911 to see whats logged if anything

for £20 you could replace all the plugs and see if that makes a difference

coils, there is a test to see if they have failed but i cant remeber the exact process

A visual check on the coil sticks tells you nothing.

Disconnect the connector on both the secondary plug coils and see if the bike runs on just the main coils.
If the problem is with the main coils it may run on just one or not at all.
It's usually just the main coils that cause running problems, the secondaries can fail but don't affect the running in the same way.

I've put it on my gs911 and nothing showed unfortunately. I'll go and try that coil trick now thanks Steptoe

Steptoe, you may just be a genius!
Took both secondary coils off and it ran slightly better but still not good. Put them back individually and not much difference with either one off.
Connected them both and took out left cyclinder main coil and no difference. Then disconnected right hand cylinder main coil and it ran even worse, so I guess this means the left hand main coil is faulty?

When did it start? I'm thinking, well, yunno, maybe you should quarantine it?

you need both, (left and right) they fail about the same time....

I may have a pair going for a reasonable amount

Well lets put it this way...

I do have a pair, if i can find the feckers lol

Thanks for the offer Santa. I've ordered a new one which should be here today. Hopefully that'll fix the issue and I'll be on my way again.

you do, being broken down for the sake of 80 quid is a bit dim

never mind the agro u might cause to other road users !!! or the damaged to the CAT, the planet etc.

There is every chance the surviving old coil will be alright! A mates primary coil went duff(@60,000) just as we were setting off on a trip to Turkey some years ago, the local dealer changed it for a new one off a bike in the showroom so we wouldn't miss our ferry. That bike has done 3 trips to the states since and is now on 115,000 and he hasn't given it a second thought.
I had secondary go last year in Scotland at 90,000 and just changed the one and it's done 5,000 since. Maybe you have just been unlucky if you have had both go in a short timespan. Cup half empty or cup half full? I'd spend the £80 on petrol, oh I already did!

He won’t break down. The bike still runs on the lower secondary plugs.
