Hi peeps, I have a relatively new to me 2004 R1150RS twin spark that's running a bit rough. Vibration is quite bad, particularly under load, and there's a "knocking" noise under load which disappears if I feather the throttle off slightly. Vibration increase quite significantly as revs rise although the bike does seem to rev quite freely. There's also a knocking at idle. Bike fires up well from cold and will hold a high idle speed (2,000rpm) on the "choke" and will idle reasonably well until warmed up.

The noise at idle sounds just like this video posted by Chris harris on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_vm7C5buVU

The video is of a bad stick coil diagnosis. However, the failed stick coil shows no spark when tested.

Here's what I've done so far.

1. Replaced the rubber caps for the vacuum intakes. The old ones were non-original and I'm not convinced they were working properly.

2. Balanced the throttle bodies and checked correct seating of cables.

3. Checked valve clearances, all OK.

4. Checked for spark. Purchased new spark plugs, pulled secondary plug caps and with original plugs in place put new plugs in plug caps and ran bike to check for spark. Did this one at a time and for stick coils as well. Spark is present at each plug but does not appear to be particularly strong although I have no term of reference. e.g. at one stick coil spark is only seen to one "side" of the plug. This is different to what was seen in the video of a bike with a bad stick coil where there is no spark at all. Do/can stick coils partially fail or break down or is it an all or nothing?

5. Replaced old plugs with new.

Bike runs no differently than before.

From research I think it may now be one of two things:

1. Stick coils

2. Fuel pipe/s in fuel tank, maybe the u shaped one.

From the symptoms, what does the collective think my issue could be? Stick coils are expensive, anyone in the Southampton area about who may be willing to let me try their known good stick coils? I'd rather not pay that much money and not solve the problem.

Many thanks
Steve

PS bike has done 39,500 miles
PPS I've previously owned an R1100RS for 14 years and know that the current running of my bike is not normal.

Hi flatdog, not checked the injectors. Not sure how I would do that and what I would be looking for?

Get them serviced by a local garage...
Alternatively scource some from motorworks.@35:00 ea

I'm awaiting delivery of new injectors, mine are fine just want to try uprated ones from the us.

If you want to check yours are ok or not, I'll send you mine to check if your bikes any better. It will have to be next week tho !!

Check the stick coils by pulling one at a time when running, it should make a noticeable difference, if it doesn't then the coil is bad.

Just seen your location.... tried contacting Steptoe yet?

How were your throttle bodies synced?

I synced at idle using the brass screws, each is backed out about 1.5 turns and are pretty close to each other.

Then synced at a constant 3,000rpm by adjusting cable on the RHS throttle body.

Used a Carbtune

I'm currently in Southampton for a while, not in Goring on Thames as per my profile.

Steptoe can you reply, he has been given good advice twice, but it's clearly not good enough unless you give it, then he can thank you and carry on :D

I thought he had checked the coil sticks.
If not then you're on the money...
Op check the oil sticks as advised.:D

OK, stick coils all good (checked again). flatdog, would love to try your injectors next week. I'll send pm

Ok Steve.
Just read that you checked you sparks, I'll get them in the post next week.
Got your address ta,:beerjug:

OK, stick coils all good (checked again).

That is not how you check the stick coils. You need to test if they're sparking under compression, a failed coil can still spark a plug out of the cylinder as it needs very little effort.

Pull the lower secondary plug caps off the spark plug and start the engine so it's running on both main spark plugs.
Does it run on both cylinders ?

Have you checked as Steptoe has advised yet?
Got my injectors here awaiting your prompt.

OK, checked stick coils as per Steptoe's advice which highlighted a problem with one of them. Two coils procured (figured best to replace both originals) and bike runs MUCH better. I'm now going to check/clean injectors in an effort to find the last 15% of smooth running which I'm sure is in there somewhere :-). I'll also go over the throttle balance again, just to make sure.

On that basis I don't think I'll need your injectors to test but really appreciate the offer of help.

Great news on resolving the root cause.

Are you setting the tappets with all 4 feeler guages at once, or one at a time?
