Was having a chat with Mark (servicing headman) at Ocean t`other day,and out of curiosity enquired what oil they used at the 1st (600 mile) service for the 800GS. (my newly aquired lavalump currently at 300miles :D)
He told me that they now use a fully synthetic oil `specially developed` by Castrol for BMW. I mentioned that as I understood it,using a fully synthetic oil so early in an engines life, can prevent the proper bedding in process of the various moving parts.Mark replied that this new oil did not have many of the additives commonly used in synthetic engine oils, and was now recommended by BMW for use at the 600mile oil/filter change. He went on to mention that the stock of semi-synthetic previously used had run out,and they were now using the full synth as a matter of course, and that it helped reduce clutch wear.
Just wondering if anyone else has heard of this new `specially developed` lube, and exactly what the `running in oil`that the bike arrives with is?
I realise another oil based thread is probably not going to bring many replies, but hey ho,Im a little
PS.Mr Moderator, can you please tell me why, when I am all logged in,nice and proper and try to post/start thread/reply,when I click `submit` or `preview`, half the time I get bumped straight to a message page saying I cant submit cos Im not logged in! Then when using that same page to try and log in again,I just get a blank page,Grrr most frustrating!! (and probably my own stupidity to blame,am I doin something wrong?)

FULL-SYNTH

Was having a chat with Mark (servicing headman) at Ocean t`other day, and out of curiosity enquired what oil they used at the 1st (600 mile) service for the 800GS.
He told me that they now use a fully synthetic oil `specially developed`by Castrol for BMW.
My BMW serviceman also recommended full-synth and this is Castrol Power RS Racing 4T 5W-40, but then with the 6000 mile service interval. Probably the same as You got.

I mentioned that as I understood it,using a fully synthetic oil so early in an engines life, can prevent the proper bedding in process of the various moving parts.
I don't think it's a problem, because at the 600 mile service one normally get Castrol half-synth 10W40, so at that point the engine is quite runned-in!

Mark replied that this new oil did not have many of the additives commonly used in synthetic engine oils, and was now recommended by BMW for use at the 600mile oil/filter change.
This Castrol Power RS Racing 4T 5W-40 is a very, very good oil indeed - quite expensive [about 20 % up of the 10W40].
But the engine runs very nicely on this oil, with the Castrol 10W40 [H-synth] I noticed that its lubrication, began to run out at about 5000 miles allready.
With the Full-synth oil, I now didn't change the oil at all. I probably change myself when driven about 8500-9000 miles. Now after 7800 miles [last oil change], it runs smoothly like it was just changed!

With this oil and the NGK Iridium sparks, I don't notice much vibration at 4500-6000 tpm as well.
