On the road, for now:-)
Please can anyone help???

I STILL have my 98 1100 and unfortunately she has suffered a technical hitch last night whilst out in torrential rain. Over the last few weeks the abs has not been setting itself because the battery was a little low. This was sorted using an optimate charger and bottomed out any abs faults.
However, last night whilst out in pooring rain I started the old girl up and was suprised that I could hear another electrical buzzer or motor spinning, the ABS set itself then all of a sudden the warning lights came on flashing alternately. I kept resetting the the warning lights until I got home which was about a thirty mile trip. To my suprise when I pulled up on the drive and turned her off I could still hear an electrical motor spinning, the noise was coming from under the tank, I removed all the fuses and relays but the noise remained and started to flatten the battery. I eventually disconnected the battery, which by now will need to be re-charged. I can only assume that there is a problem with the abs.
Am I right? Is it terminal? How do I fix it?Is it costly? I have looked at the Haynes manual which doesn't give any explanation about the spinning noise or possible abs faults, I wondered if I could dsconnect the abs and run without it for a while until I can afford the parts or whatever is required.
Hopefully somebody out there will know exactly what has happened to poor old "jessie", but for now she will have to remain semi naked in parts in the garage.

Please help, I can't afford for the old girl to die!!:type:duno

Sounds like a stuck relay, how about reconnecting the battery with the fusebox top off, Ill wager the culprit will identify itself. sometimes a temporary cure can be effected by removing the offending relay and accidentally dropping it on the ground :thumb2

Replies thank goodness

Guys,

thanks for the speedy replies, I have reset the abs buy pressing the switch on the dash, I have also turned the ignition off and now the lights flash alternately which it didnt do before. Is there another reset I can do??
I will try reconnecting the battery and see what happens, I have just been on the phone to motoworks and they say it could be the fuel pump sticking, which could be £170 to replace. The noise sounds like a scalectrix motor spinning, I'm just about to tuck into my roast dinner, then I will get changed and go out in the garage and see what we come up with. I dont think it can be an abs fault as I dont think it has any motor type device that would start spinning, I will let you know how I get on.
I really appreciate your advice, it makes you feel so much better knowing other GSERS want to help, thanx.:aidan

If the bike runs and you can hear the fuel pump running then its more likely the pump warning of impending trouble, my pump is audible when the bike is low on fuel, I believe certain motor cars can donate fuel pumps to GSes.

Fuel pump

Well,

I have just tried to reconnect the battery and the noise is still there. I'm not sure but am I right in thinking that the fuel pump is in the tank, therefore if I remove it but still have it connected {if that makes sense} I should be able to identify the pump and the noise if its coming from the pump. It's possibly the same buzzing sound you normally get when you have the ignition on and flick the side stand up which I assume is the fuel pump priming the old girl prior to firing. Trouble is I'm on my own at the moment and cant hold a tank of fuel on me own whilst carrying out further investigations.
I feel a phone call to more hands coming on shortly.

She will survive with your help:oonyack:bow:beerjug:

Pulling apart the four way connector on the right side of the bike (behind the black side panel) will isolate the fuel pump/gauge.
Noisy fuel pumps can be caused by dirty fuel filters too.

As stated in the above post. Take the tank off or unplug it and if the noise is still there it isn't the fuel pump.

It could be the ABS pump, which has a relay inside.
Prize off the plastic cover on the R/H side of the ABS pump and remove the relay, again turn on the ignition and see if the noise has stopped.

Its not the fuel pump

I have just disconnected the black plug and connected the battery again, even with the ignition off the noise is still there.

I am going to try and find the abs pump tomorrow whem the wife is about to hold stuff etc. Is the relay under a black cover that has a circular piece attached to it aswell, near where the metal pipes go into what I assume to be the abs unit. It is strange how it will buzz/do its thing even with the ignition off.

Sorted

I have found that the abs pump was spinning and sounded really dry inside, like a knackered water pump would on a car. The relay for the pump appeared to be stuck causing the pump to spin.
I took the cover off of the relay and checked it over, this has now stopped the pump noise, I put it all back together and reset the abs, as described by steptoe.
A quick test ride and the abs has set itself and alls well. I noticed that there were two bleed nipples on top of the abs system, do you think i need to bleed it at all as the pump sounded so dry, I have topped up the resevoirs and will soon be fitting new brake pads.

Thanks for your advice its been invaluable.

Bleeding ABS ...

... is considered by some to be a bit of a 'Black Art'; however I think there is a guide to doing it somewhere on here; the Search function is your friend :thumb2

I strongly recommend you use the filling adapter to avoid air bubbles and low fluid whilst flushing/bleeding.

The bike is an simple 1100 - no servos or seperate reservours. So don't confuse yourself or get worried when trawling the internet, the bleed nipples on top of the abs module are straightforward bleed nipples, same as on your calipers. Bled the same way as your calipers.

Don't worry about the noise sounding as if it's "dry". Bleeding it doesn't make it "wet".

Great news, you have effected a cure, it may be worthwhile replacing the relay when the opportunity arises, once they begin to stick they will probably do it again sooner rather than later, of course you could buy a new relay and carry it around for the next 75000 miles :augie

Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou

To eveybody thats assisted me with this,

A BIG thankyou, I will sought a new relay out and in due course will bleed the ads, I assume I just pump the brake lever and undo the abs nipples in turn as you would on the calipers?

I was considering putting the bike up for sale recently as she has a few niggles that have got me thinking it's time to change. However I don't think that you would find so many helpful people with invaluable advice on a forum such as UKGSER. I will now keep "jessie" and may think about getting another bike to sit in the garage with her when I can afford it.

Thanks again for the speedy replies, I can use her for my regular commute to work tomorrow, happy days.

All best regards,

Dunnie.:aidan

Hello chaps, long time no see :)

I might have the same problem. A pump whirring with the ignition switched off and ABS not resetting on my 2001 1150. I've also had to disconnect the battery to stop the noise. It started happening yesterday.

What I can't work out is where the relay is and how I prise it off. I've attached a picture of the offending bit.

Any ideas?

On ABS II the relay is piggyback on the ABS hydro. If you look you have electrical connections running under a black cap and this is the relay gubbins. Stuck relays will be permanently stuck. Whilst working for a dealer I saw this on an RT and it is a bit alarming for the uninitiated.

When the ABS kicks in it does via a relay, when the relay is stuck the ABS sounds permanently "on". The one i saw unstuck itslef after a little rest:D On other relays I have unstuck 'em with a sharp tap to dislodge connections. The cover slides off as i remember. have a look...

Thanks. I can't see any way it slides off. I've removed the screw that seems to be holding it on but it's not shifting. I've given it a few "taps" hoping that might free it but to no avail.

I guess I might have to bite the bullet and get it to a dealers :eek
