Hi All,

I have a water-cooled 2016 GS adv. Ive been having a funny feeling since Ive bought the bike, and it not the usual pain in the wallet feeling :)

I bought the bike from a BMW dealer, its done 10.5 k and immaculate condition. Ive brought the "Feeling" to their attention and their mechanic rode the bike and also noticed it. He's since ridden one of their bikes and apparently it does the exact same thing so they are saying it normal. They are reputable dealers and Ive no reason to distrust them. But it just doesn't seem right to me.

Ill try to explain but its difficult to describe. Its like the rear suspension has come slap/play in it, but not all the time Its almost like a jigga jigga jigga feeling through the foot pegs and sometimes a noticeable clunk. More noticeable at low speeds over uneven surfaces. I don't know if this is the ESA working or what the hell it is. If its normal than fine Ill have to live with it, I just want to bottom it out really with people who have the same bikes.

Cheers

DKH

I had a similar foot peg feeling from your description and it was the rose joint in the transmission shaft that had seized. Might be worth looking into?

I do get an occasional clunk from the suspension and it’s done it on both my GSA’s.

Sounds like it could be in the transmission, maybe a driveshaft c/v.

Why don't you arrange a test ride on a dealer demo GS and see how they compare?

Bit of Ann update. I’ve been playing around with the esa settings. If I put it in single helmet and luggage mode. It doesn’t do it at all. Maybe it just how it is. The dealership took their same year model bike out for a test ride and apparently they exactly the same.

I've had similar clunks but worked out it was crap being thrown up by the front tyre and striking the bash plate! :thumby:

CPJS is right don’t trust the dealer, take the demo bike out for yourself, it still sounds like drive shaft, when you alter the ‘helmet’ setting you alter the height of the bike which slightly alters the angle of the drive shaft.

Test the demo bike!

I get a slight rough feeling through the footpegs, almost as if road imperfections can be felt. Not bad just as you say a 'funny feeling' I am trying different footpegs to see if it goes away. nothing wrong but as you say a 'funny' feeling

I had the same concern and feel it the most when going over small bumps in the road. I took a demo GSA for a ride and it did the same thing so figured it was normal.

You're pretty safe to put it out of your mind.

thats exactly when I'm getting it. small bumps are the worst, almost like a chattering through the pegs.

Im booking the bike into a different dealers to get them to test ride it and taking out another GSA just to compare and be on the safe side. As I say, if it supposed to be like that then fair enough but I really don't want it to bugger up if Im halfway around Europe in April.

It's weird but nothing to worry about

The feeling of riding over small stones felt through the pegs as little 'knocks' at lower speeds is normal for a GS.

Check for play in the swinging arm to bevel box pivot bearing, they can develop play from around 7,000 miles and it feels like a clunk through the driveshaft and vibration through the pegs. It felt worse on mine when it was on the 2 up settings

The needle roller one on mine was shot by 13,000 miles , once replaced the sensation was removed.

Dealers say it is a regular problem that BMW are aware of but not admitting to as they are putting it down to wear and tear .

With the bike on the centre stand get someone to take hold of the rear wheel at the 20 to 2 position and rock it , at the same time place a finger against the inner bearing (next to the wheel) and if the bearing is worn you will feel the movement. On mine you could see the movement (part nos 2)

Mine does it too, wind open throttle and enjoy it’s just the nature of the beast :thumb2
Got to remember it’s a glorified Massey Ferguson

Well off to coopers tundridge Wells in the morning for them to have a look at it. Will see what the outcome it. Have to say. They were very helpful on the phone. Hey are also trying to organise a another GSA for me to take out to see it it’s the same. Thumbs up so far.

Interesting. I’ll get them to Check tomorrow. Certinely fits the symptoms.

SO. Problem solved. After a while of head scratching and a few test rides it turns out it was the rear mudsling which was catching the tyre but only on those “rapid” bumps. Removed and no longer a “funny feeling” mechanic refitted it giving more room to tyre and now all is fine. Big thumbs up to Coopers. Can’t rate them highly enough. They weren’t letting me go away until problem was sorted and I was happy. My dealer of choice in the future. And it’s certainly not my nearest.

Great result, what was the mudsling you where using, was it a chinese cheapo ??????

Just seen this - I had exactly the same issue, it was the hugger and the mudsling interfering with each other on LHS front edge. A quick trim of the hugger with a router and problem sorted.
