Hi All,

I recently posted my impressions as a brand new GSER having returned to two wheels after a long break. I've since spent quite a few hours in the saddle and thought I would add an update for those considering a purchase.

I've been using my GSA to commute from North West Leicestershire to Nottingham which includes Motorway, A road and some country lanes through a cheeky village shortcut. The big GS has been superb throughout; solid, fast and dependable. It has great presence on the road and attracts a lot of attention compared to other vehicles. I ride with lights / fog lights on constantly which helps with visibility but there have been a few occasions where I have been deliberately cut up allowing for a good try of the excellent brakes. Surprisingly the majority of car drivers have been very decent and polite and frequently give way etc.

Recent purchases include some Rukka Apollo gloves, a pair of Lowe Alpine silk liner gloves, (an excellent combination,) and most importantly an Accelerator module. I know that one of the longest threads on this site concerns Accelerator modules / Booster plugs, but I can confirm that the Acc module improves low speed riding considerably and definitely smooths out the jerky drive. No major improvements in power / fuel consumption but the smoothing out is improvement enough for £30.

The GSA is a bike that really rewards practice and my skills as a rider have really improved during the last few weeks. I've made a point of picking a skill like bends / gear changing / positioning / low speed control etc. and focus on that skill during a ride to or from work. I've also found that talking to myself has really helped, sounds a bit crazy but coaching myself does seem to help and keeps my mind on the job in hand.

Any complaints? Well yes. Should I really have to spend £30 to improve the jerky lashy drive on a bike that costs close to £8K??? Should I have to use a crystal ball to work out how much petrol I've got left? I suppose what I'm asking is are the often mentioned and not to be questioned "BMW things" actually long term faults that BMW haven't bothered to fix? Don't get me wrong, I love my GSA and at 46 years old get just as excited before a ride out as I did when I was 16, but would be put up with these issues in a car of the same value?

My immediate plans are to keep riding through winter as much as possible, continue to improve my riding skills and book into Roy Pidcock in Long Eaton for a once over prior to them taking over my servicing. The information and advice on this site has already proved invaluable so thank you to all the GSERs out their and a safe and happy 2014.

Cheers,

John
