Hi all i have had some intermittent problems with the potienometer for a while usually pulling in the clutch will let me start her.
The other day the gear indicator went wild numbers racing up and down and the bike would not start after a bit of faffing about i got her going and rode the 60 miles home it was ok for a day or 2 then started again.
This time the bike started normally i was about to put in gear and pull off she cut out and i am not getting any readings in gear window and bike wont start so i have bought a new unit hoping this will sort it out i plan to remove the battery fit unit and reconnect battery is this enough to get the bloody thing running or will it need any dealer input via 911 tool.
some of you say it will some say it wont has anyone done this at home with no problems even my local dealers don't know

Has the battery been good or have you been making do with a bad one?

I have a friend who did this The bottom line is the ECU is buggered

For his in the end for interest sake I took the starter cover off turned on the ignition and jumped the solenoid so that the starter turned over

It started and ran

He's making do with the hidden button I put in for him but at lest he can get it started and ride it now

To make sure I swopped in my ECU and got the gear indicator and could spin the engine over with the starter but obviously it had the EWS fault with my unit and his key and it wouldn;t start but it proved the fault is in the ECU

You could try plugging in the gear position indicator without actually fitting it onto the bike to see if it works ??

sounds like you may have a faulty clutch lever switch as well, either way the gear position sensor does not need coding to the bike just fit it and see:D
it would be worth checking and clearing any existing codes just so you know the ecu is clear if you have further problems.mike:thumb2

seems a bit strong suggesting a faulty ecu ,just because it would seem another bike has a serious fault.i would fit the GPS then if you are still having bother get some proper diagnostics done at a decent workshop.if you want to talk things through pm me and i will send my number to you and maybe talk through what is going on.mike

I have a friend who did this The bottom line is that HIS ECU is buggered

Apologies Just noted the response from Mikeyboy I had to rush earlier and didn;t read it thru properly

Unplug your gear switch and just plug the new one in with out all the hassle of fitting it If it registers on the dash then all is well

If not Sorry but worth trying the jumping the solenoid trick to see if it starts then with your old one connected

Hi all just a follow up new unit put on tonight everything is rosey unit does not need any dealer input you do not need to disconnect the battery but make sure you don't turn the ignition on with the unit removed thanks for you posts guys
