Will you do it or skip it?

Would you just run on changing the oil and wait for it to blow

It seems overkill to replace the crank/piston/rings/pins/exhaust valves and rebuild the shock/forks - when you've done the oil and filters/valves every 10 hours

A dealer said the labour would be in the region of £1000-£1200 and parts a further £500-600

That's plain scary and really would put me off the bike

Riding it only 2 days per month, means it would need doing every 6 months

and there was me thinking now I've the airhad back I should look at a PX'ing the XC for a 450!

Maybe a 300 KTM stroker would be better/cheaper/more fun

Every exc crf etc has that kind of service intervals.
nobody does it.
I know crf riders hoe split the engine every year and replace the piston etc, for just in case.(he rides 150-160 hours ayear pure enduro).

My Athene drz bigbore kit 44xcc says every 20 hour replace piston...... never done it and rode a lot more then 20 hours, stil its running very fine.

I personal think that if you ride green laning that you shoun'd worry to much.
In the beginning there were rummers of an alternative service interval fot Amateur rider's green laning an rally.

But, if i look at the conditions that i rode last year in dutch offroad, the engine had a lot to do. there for perhaps the first time i will do it.

The forks chaning oil and checking is something that i will do every year.
In the MX scene the do it twice a year.

I think that if you do a lot of green laning, the ride up and down from the fun stof then you better take a XC/650cc thing.

I only ride offroad with it and put the bike on a trailer.

Don't believe all that crap about engine rebuild every 70 hours, that's only if you regularly race the thing. KTM recommend rebuilding the EXC engine every 90 hours, but I never did that either.

Every green laner that I owned I never did the full rebuild as recommended. Just change the oil as per the schedule and check valve clearances etc. Each and every one ran as good as the day it first started. If however you regularly ride the wheels of the thing and run the engine at full revs; that's another matter and may need a bit more maintenance.
