I have never really been happy with the stock forks on my G650X - quite harsh and limited adjustment (no preload adjuster).

Now one of my adjusters has broken and I've doing some digging.

- I see that Cole from Sibersky Extreme changed his forks to KTM 640 Adv forks.
- This bloke (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7228321) changed his for 45mm 'Zoke forks.
- RoneR6 on this post (http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=216870 bought some Marzocchi Shivers then dissappeared without a trace.

From what I have read:
- the stock forks are cheapo waterered versions of Marzhocchi 45mm Shiver Forks
- the Marzhocchi 45mm Shiver Forks as available aftermarket are really good forks.

Trouble is I am sure that some engineering jiggery pokery will be needed to get the wheel & caliper to fit any replacement forks.

So what are my real options?

Could do with a pointer to a suspender specialist I could talk to in the first instance.

Ta !

Mike.

HERE you can read more (from post #40)

For the moment there is not more to say because I couldn't test it yet.

The moment I had test it, I can tell you more ;)

Hey RoneR6 - many thanks for the link. A very interesting read for sure, and the bike prep looks great.

So let me get this straight - seems to me like you:

A) Stripped out the internals of the BMW forks.
B) Replaced them with internals of the Shiver forks.
C) Drilled / Machined the bottom of the fork to take the compression cartridge & adjuster.

Correct?

I think I'll look into doing this. Having compression on one leg, and rebound on the other just seems like an odd compromise to me.

Cheers

Not until my bike's warranty expires will I attempt a front end mod..... then I will be fitting a set of Paioli Blue Steel 46mm conventional forks, using the stock tripple clamps.

Rose and Crazyivan on advrider have dome the shiver mod, keeping the stock fork legs and putting the shiver internals in to them.

Hey Timpo

Interesting. Any idea how much this will cost, and how you'll go about mounting the front wheel & caliper? And where you'd get it done?

I have a brand new set of forks here, and the mod will be done in my shed. The only stumbling block will be the adaptor to mount the caliper to the fork leg.
The easy answer would be to use a Honda CR250 front wheel and caliper, but i want to try and keep as much of the OE.

Like i said, i have warranty until Novemeber, then the fun starts.:thumb2

Timpo,

So you reckon the 46mm dia tubes will fit the 45mm dia OE fork clamps without too much bother?

Why wait until warranty runs out; I mean, changing the forks wont invalidate the entire warranty e.g. engine, electrics, everything to the rear of the forks etc.

Woteva, will be v interested to follow your upgrade.

fork springs

Am currently looking at fork springs too, hagon springs are 85 ukp and have a rating of 5.2 to 6.5 and hyper-pro are 120 ukp and 4.6 to 6.6 so i think i'll be trying a set of the hagons :)

I too, am interested in this.

I am leaning towards fitting KTM forks and wheel set, so only have to change the triple clamp. Aprilia forks are nice, but seems the 48mm KTM forks are a step above.
If someone knows of a set of 690 forks for sale, please let me know.

Cheers.

David

Guys, if you want to do a real upgrade on the front with minimum faffing about, have a look at the marzzochi factory forks.

Walter Colebatch has a thread over on avdrider detailing his front end conversion using WP forks.

I have WP's on my dakar now and that is because I found them cheap.

I am doing a KTM transplant as well.
From the research that I did, the 48mm WP setup is considerably better than the OEM Marzocci stuff. The factory Shivers are about on par with WP.

I'm having mine done at Hyperpro (thanks Timpo) and when it happens, I hope to have a little write up with pictures.

cheers.

looks like walter is going down the marzochhi factory shivers route now ......

Reading this thread at least 3 of you guys should have done front end transplants by now and a couple of others open heart surgery on the OEM forks...........spill the beans then ;)
