Gambia on a Gapper; Charity raffle for a Honda CB1 400

Marc i know you were trying to be as up front as possible and i don't think for one minute you intended to mislead anyone but i think the post didn't make it clear enough.. and i include other threads too in this...

i think all posts or threads related to charities should make very clear at the top of the thread what money goes where and how much is "lost" in admin etc or what is not going to the actual charities as the likes of the "enduro" ones apparently give very little to the charity compared to the price of the trip.
i think personal fundrasing should have it's own section so that people know they are helping the person not the charity.

Agreed :thumb2

now here's the thing.....
he has donated it to me to sell to help fund my trip with the rest of the Tossers doing the Scoots To The Sahara run this December.*

In my opinion Marc has made it very clear in his first post that he is fund raising to help him cover the costs of getting him and the C90 to the Gambia.

All the other riders, like Marc, have bought their own bikes and are sourcing help with their expenses too.

Marc asked on this site if people would consider helping him by buying a raffle ticket and people can choose whether they wish to do so or not.

There may be a point that this section is not the place for this fundraising effort, but it should be pointed out that the charity in the Gambia will be getting a C90 at the end of it all which will be a major help to them in their work.

:aidan

Not that it really matters what I think, but I always got the perception that this was a fundraiser raffle with the chance of anyone winning the 400 bike for a stake of a tenner

With reasonable odds (1 in 96 I believe) and no way to fix it unless he can play with the lottery

As Mandy says the end product is that the C90s get to the Gambia and they get to use them

And with the added Bonus of Aidan sorting a short hop to Engerland / Wales thats not a bad deal

Besides Ogmios is a tad on the Humble side and it takes folks till blow his trumpet for him!

Nor does it matter what I think either and I'm not being critical of Ogmios here. He's been up front albeit I was confused as it seems some others were but that may have more to do with other posts than Ogi's. His cause being apparently championed by the one of the Irish Mods and the Charity Mod was confusing to me. Thankfully, the position has now been made clear.

Would the charity not be far better served if everyone buying a raffle ticket was to send the money directly to the charity or am I missing something here?

Anyhow, apologies for the slight hi-jack and good luck with the fundraising, Marc.

I think the words fundraising and Charity can be very misleading... may people will assume that if Charity and fundraising are mentioned that they are giving all there money to a good cause... but in many cases the charities they collect for only give a small part of their total to the actual good cause the rest is took up in admin and paying some staff very big wages.

When asking for money for stuff like this on the site I think it only fair to make things ultra crystal clear.. i don't think just saying a charities name is enough.. people need to explain a bit about what happens to the money once the charity gets it.

As i said i think Marc is a very honest and trustworthy person but unless you read all the threads on his funding of this charity event it can be a bit misleading IMO

I really think personal fundraising should not be in a charities section as this blurs the giving to the charity aspect of it.

The end product could end up that people give far more money to get a person to a place or do an event than the charity gets which to me sort of defeats the purpose of doing something for charity so maybe then a better way could maybe be found to help.

I was told of this thread and joined again to put my 2p worth in.

5 Irish boys were at one time going on Calum's rd trip where all money raised went to the charity 2 subsequently couldn't afford the trip and pulled out.
I myself cannot afford to go so have pulled out of the the trip albiet that I am organising the Skye end.

I have no problem with Ogmios looking for funding to do the trip but it has to be made clear as in "Charity raffle" it is not and shouldn't be in the charity section. I have done this with Enduroafrica twice albiet I funded the trip myself and raised for the bikes.

My main concern however is that the Irish moderator stated how unhappy he was that the Nations Rugby sweepstake went to an African charity instead of an Irish charity and along side the new Charity moderator have shown little or no support to the THREE remaining Irish boys who have raised a shitload of dosh to the same region and paying for the trip off there own backs. This may have more to do with personalities than the actual charity:confused:

Anyway Marc I have a set of PIAA Spots complete with wiring for an 1150 If you want to stick them in the FS&W section and I'll post them to the person that buys them only thing needed is instructions to wire them.

Good luck and in whatever way you do it something for the charity is far better than nothing.:oonyack

:mmmm
i've kept me gob shut til now and let this run as i think that given the topic and possible 'crossed wires' - it's right and proper. :thumb2

i've done my best to be blunt and precise, but it's impossible to have an accurate self image - especially online.
i can see the point of a specific area for 'Members fundraising' - had there been one - i would've used that.
i did what i could with what there was.
end of.

now please may i have my thread back? :D :P
