It's finally, definitely, positively really and truly happening.
In just over 4 weeks, end of the month, me and the U.K. mob are going.
For those that dont know (cant be many, but just in case, i'll explain- if you DO know all about it - just scroll down to the bit that tells you how to send a donation
)
it's a self funded charity run on a Honda C90 starting in Portsmouth by getting a ferry to Spain.
There we disembark, get on our 'Gappers' and....
just a wee ramble ...
to The Gambia.
Once there we first and foremost hand over the 'Bikes.
These will be used by the Doctors, Nurses and the community workers to cover a vast area with little in the way of infrastructure and 600,000 people!
Also taking a load of spares. Also giving them the 'bike gear we rode down in.
We spend a few days working in the hospital with whatever skills we have.
Then we fly home.(well - U.K. probably - i may hitchhike back from there LOL)
I'm also hoping to get a better idea for a possible future project;
What do they NOT have that WE here could finance, support and send out equipment to build and academics to teach?
I work in a college - figure that with a captive audience i might be able to do a bit more.
But undeniably - riding a 'Bike there (as we know from previous trips by Tossers
) gets attention for the serious work.
I'm the first GSer from Ireland to do this.
It's about 2 years since commiting to the idea - but 'logistics' have delayed departure til now.
Now,
the hard bit;
Yes, i'm asking for help.
I am not a registered charity. i am funding the majority but not all of the trip.
opinions vary as to this method of helping a good cause. Fine - we're all entitled to our opinions.
I just ask that if you feel like helping - Great, Thank You.
If you dont - fair enough, dont.
Just please, let's not get into a debate about it here.
Right, (i hated typing that bit almost as much as i do asking for help).
though we have a professional camera man with us making a DVD, (ALL proceeds direct to the charity) i'd like to make some basic videos and do a blog. (maybe not in 'Real Time' though, but when i return).
As well as the basic blunt need for money, a basic digital camera that takes a common (AA's) batteries, would be a godsend and...
any ideas on where i can get a very basic (wordprocessing) 'netpad' secondhand?
Thanks for reading this far - now for the 'where-to-send-money' bit...
