This year's trip seemed like a long time coming, especially since this year's organiser Oscar ( a native of Spain) had the trip routes and hotels in the bag by January, there were some amendments to bookings and routes but by and large the trip was just waiting for us to depart for 9 months, I like to tweak the routes and chop and change hotel booking in the run up to departure, I quite enjoy that part of the trip build up but it was not to be.
The trip was a tour of Spain taking in the Sierra Nevadas and Andalucia with some cultural highlights thrown in for good measure, the participants are;
Oscar (Oie) riding 1200 GS Adventure
Me (2WH) riding 1200GS Adventure LC
Dave (Darkhorse) riding 1200 GS Adventure TC
Martin (cookie) riding KTM 1190 Adventure
Richard (my step father) riding 1200GS TC
John (Johnnyboxer) riding 1150 GS adventure
Richard (Wapping) was due to join us but had to cancel at a late hour due to personal reasons.
Martin's partner Angie would be joining us part way and Dave would be returning earlier than the rest of us due to other commitments at home, it was amusing listening to Oscar explain this to the French lady at Brittany Ferries check in :D
We were on a 8.15am sailing on Saturday from Portsmouth to Santander aboard the Brittany Ferries vessel "Happy Shopper" or maybe it was callled Etretat......... Richard and I stayed the night in Portsmouth on Friday ready for our early morning start, the others made their way to the port that morning, except Johnny who had sailed the day before and would meet us in Spain at our first Hotel stop.
The crossing passed without event, the Etretat is part of Brittany Ferries Economie service and whilst it's fine for channel crossings to France I found the lack of choice of eateries and limited public spaces and outside deck areas a little claustrophobic though it has to be said the on board cabins were comfortable and more spacious than cabins on Brittany Ferries other ships, as we had an afternoon arrival the next day we did our best to drink the bar dry that night..........:beerjug:
The following day (Sunday) we arrived in a soggy and overcast Santander, much goading had taken place pre trip about the virtues of traveling light, most of this banter came from the master of traveling light Darkhorse, most of us fell for it, this was my effort; top box containing overnight bag, clothes and shoes, small SW Motech bag on the pillion seat with more clothes and tank bag containing..........useless crap I think ;)

I had elected to take most of my pics with my i-phone but had also used this set up with some success in the past, a small and cheap Samsung camera I had mounted on a RAM mount so brought it along again, it has a fairly low success rate on the move of 1 or 2 out of ten and the quality isn't great but I wouldn't otherwise have any pics on the move so it made the trip again, I would be thankful for it later.........

Day 1 mapsource suggested 165 miles or 4.5 hours to Leon.
Leaving Santander and the rain behind were soon in The Picos D'Europa national park and enjoying the empty roads and fantastic views, the first of the trip's technical issues became apparent when I realised my phone hadn't charged last night on the ferry and was dead as a dead thing, odd.......never mind the little Samsung was pressed into action.
003-L.jpg

004-L.jpg

Pretty soon the next technical issue filled the air with the smell of burning......Richard's HID headlight had failed and was smelling-a lot, we junked thje HID installation and fitted a regular H7 bulb and pressed on albeit slightly behind schedule..........we arrived in Leon at the rather splendid Hotel Colegiata, a Parador esque Hotel in the heart of the city, a good find :clap
014-L.jpg

The hotel was beautifully restored former monastery.

IMG_0235-L.jpg

IMG_0237-L.jpg

We wandered about in Leon and took in the sights whilst searching for a place to have supper

006-L.jpg

I settled on a salt beef salad
008-L.jpg

and after a few drinks we retired, tomorrow would be a long day...........

Day 2 mapsource suggested 432 miles or 10.43 hours to Llerena
Monday dawned wet and overcast, we had had heavy rain during the night, I was oblivious to it and slept like a log although others had not, given that we had a potentially long day we opted for an early breakfast and an early start, I discovered that my phone had still not charged and I considered it dead, online investigation revealed the nearest Apple Genius repair shop to be in Malaga, we would be close by in 2 days time.........
We pressed on and made good progress, for the most part our small group stayed together or at least "in touch" with each other, we passed through vast open plains and rolling countryside, every time we approached hilly terrain the sky grew darker and some of us stopped to don waterproofs or wet weather gloves etc. stops for pics were rare-especially for me :(

017-L.jpg

016-L.jpg

Further South we encountered heavy rain and thick fog, in Spain? Who'd have thought it :blast

We made good progress and arrived at the hotel in Llerena

The Hotel's Atrium;
020-L.jpg

We were shown to the hotel's underground car park and checked in, we elected to eat in the Hotel restaurant which was excellent and good value, Johnny was getting lairy in the bar.........
023-L.jpg

some of us went for a wander around the town square before turning in, another early start beckoned..........

Day 3 mapsource suggested 239 miles or 6.5 hours to Ronda
We enjoyed an excellent breakfast and agreed to set off together, cookie was going to pick up Angie at the airport today and I had formulated a plan to go directly to the Hotel in Ronda at some point and drop my luggage and head down to Malaga in search of the Apple shop to repair or replace my phone.
We rode together for most of the morning and at a coffee stop cookie and I left the group and set off in different directions.
Approaching Ronda......
IMG_0246-XL.jpg

I arrived at Ronda and located the unfortunately named Hotel Colon, I checked in and shed a layer of clothing, dropped my bags and headed in the general direction of Malaga land of the trout pout and runaway British petty criminal it is alleged.......
The road from Ronda down to Malaga is a cracker, fast and fun I enjoyed it a lot, the temperature was now in the low 30's so it was a relief to park at the mall and enter the shiny air conditioned temple to consumerism ;)
My phone was not able to be repaired and as I didn't have a working phone to offer in exchange an upgrade was not available to me :blast so Mr Apple relieved me of 200 yo yo's in exchange for a new working phone the same as the one I had, the nice man even connected it to a cloud and I got all my pics and numbers and music back, life could continue :clap
I arrived in Ronda at nightfall, so I took a few snaps.....

IMG_0011-L.jpg

IMG_0009-L.jpg

I found the Hotel Colon again :augie
IMG_0017-L.jpg

After a shower I went in search of my travelling companions, some supper and beer, not necessarily in that order

We ate well and exchanged stories of our day over a few beers, as the night temperatures dropped Johnny put on this rather fetching sparkly shawl to ward off the cold :augie
IMG_0008-L.jpg

Day 4 mapsource suggested 190 miles or 5.5 hours to Granada
A leisurely ride of less than 200 miles today so no early start required today, we enjoyed a great breakfast and despite it's name the Hotel had proved comfortable, well located and very reasonably priced at 25 euro B&B, secure parking was a little extra but overall highly recommended :thumby:
Dave was leaving us today and heading North to get the ferry in a couple of days time, after breakfast we said our goodbye's Dave was aiming to get a little more than halfway to Santander to give himself an easy ride the following day to the ferry port.........
Cookie and I knew that the first road the rest of the group would encounter today was a cracker having both ridden it twice yesterday, I attached the little Samsung camera to the Ram mount and stayed at the back of the group and tried to capture a few shots on the move;

046-L.jpg

062-L.jpg

035-XL.jpg

We followed the twisty A3971 toward Malaga before heading North on the A355 towards Coin before picking up the A357 and A7000 along mile after mile of switchback which was thirsty work so we stopped for a coffee
Orange%20between%20cactus-L.jpg

before pressing on again and stopping for lunch overlooking the Mediterranean, I'm sure someone will have taken a pic...........maybe not :nenau

For us this is traveling light;
IMG_0049-L.jpg

We pressed on along fabulous deserted twisting roads, stopping for the occasional pic

109-L.jpg

110-L.jpg

Some great roads and stunning vistas en route to Granada.
IMG_0050-XL.jpg

The group became fragmented as we neared Granada and our respective sat navs attempted to recalculate in the busy city's one way systems, the tall buildings and narrow streets meant none of us could locate satellites, we spent a lot of time back tracking and going around in circles looking for the Hotel, the road signs weren't helping :jes
Granada%20sign-L.jpg

Granada we would be our home for the next few days and tomorrow we had all agreed to have a day off the bikes and hit the tourist trail..............

Great thread guys. I'm collecting my bike on Wednesday next in Malaga airport this has given me the kick in the arse I need to head away from the coast this time up to Pradallano (Sierra Nevada) ski resort. :thumb

Continuing day 4.......... ;)
Having checked into the hotel we started a tour on foot ably lead by Angie who dictated a brisk pace.......
We gawped
IMG_0067-L.jpg

We stopped and stared
IMG_0071-XL.jpg

We walked endless cobbled streets
IMG_0078-XL.jpg

We posed for make believe album cover pics ;)
IMG_0072-L.jpg

We wondered why Richard wanted to appear the same height as Angi
IMG_0075-L.jpg

We wondered what it might be like to take a tour of the city on one of these
IMG_0082-L.jpg

We took turns to get familiar with the Segway and booked a tour for tomorrow........

Day 5 forget mapsource, we left the bikes 3 floors down in the basement car park we paid 11 euros a night for........
We started the day with a bus tour of the city, it's official we were now bus wankers :D
After a trip (see what I did there cookie.....) to the old part of the city near the Alhambra we enjoyed a great lunch and headed back down to begin our Segway tour.......
Will Granada ever recover? So much carnage and mayhem, so many unplanned "get offs" the guide was wetting himself he thought we were brilliant
Hi Viz wankers.....
IMG_0097-X2.jpg

Note the TKC tyres and pannier mounts :D

That evening we went back to the old town to watch the sunset and have a few beers

Alhambra-X2.jpg

And this happened......
cookie%20x%203.jpg

Day 6 go and ride day 5 route mapsource suggested a round trip of 244 miles or 7.5 hours
Another early start, there was method in this madness for Richard and I as we'd found an Irish bar near our hotel where we could watch the Rugby at 5.45pm........
Johnny had elected to have another day off the bike and continue on the tourist trail whilst cookie & Angi had plans of their own, this left Oscar Richard and myself to follow the twisting route through the Sierra Nevada, Oscar set a brisk but sensible pace, the roads were deserted and the sun was shining, what a day-what a ride......
IMG_0115-X2.jpg

IMG_0116-X2.jpg

IMG_0114-X2.jpg

Sierra%20Nevada%20pano.jpg

A superb day's riding and possibly the best of the trip there will be a return :clap

Anyway, on to the evening's entertainment, be upstanding for the national anthem "My hen laid a haddock, a haddock for tea........"
IMG_0120-L.jpg

The bar was packed, there was a great atmosphere, there were a dozen or more Aussies in the bar but the rest of the bar were cheering for Wales-who were stuffed by the men in Yellow :augie
For Oscar it was all about the cake.......
IMG_0058-L.jpg

Day 7 go and ride day 7's route, titled 4140 bends mapsource suggested 250 miles or 7 hours!
250 miles on these roads is a long day so we breakfasted early (ish) and Oscar,Richard,Cookie & Angie & myself set off, Johnny was still hoping to secure tickets to go to the Alhambra in Granada.
Another cracker, stunning roads and great scenery, I wondered whether we had left it too late in the year (early October) this time when we set off especially as Northern Spain had been cold & a little wet in places a few days earlier but the weather and empty roads proved this was a great time to tour Southern Spain, good call Oscar :clap
I didn't take many pics today as the pace was brisk and the riding demanding

IMG_0051-3919x852.jpg

IMG_0092-X2.jpg

Angi had joked over coffee earlier that when cookie and I break away from the group "things get a little racy" :green gri here the bikes are cooling down after a workout
IMG_0091-XL.jpg

Tomorrow we ride to Segovia, our last night in Spain.

Day 8 Granada to Segovia mapsource suggests 317 miles or 5 hours and 6 minutes

Another early start, bags packed and bikes loaded we are having breakfast by 8am and agree to ride together as a group......the ride should be easy as it's only a transit route to get us to our last hotel in Segovia and features a lot of major trunk roads and motorways, John and I leave for a petrol station on the route and arrange to meet the others in 10 minutes and never saw a sign of them all day :D
We experienced some heavy rain showers but had an otherwise uneventful journey to Segovia, arriving at the town we were greeted by the sight of the Roman Aqueduct :clap

Segovia%20Aqueduct-X2.jpg

Having checked into another great hotel (well done Oscar :clap ) and having first watched the Moto GP on cookie's i-pad in the hotel foyer with a beer or two we assembled for a walk of the walled city
Segovia%201-XL.jpg

Segovia%202-XL.jpg

Segovia%20statue-XL.jpg

We sat and had a few beers in the shadow of the Aqueduct until darkness fell
IMG_0141-X2.jpg

Before dining on suckling roast pig at this restaurant, inside the walls are covered with pics of celebrities and movie stars and powerful heads of state all of whom appear to have dined on the house specialty of suckling roast pig which they cut with the edge of a plate, it was rather good :drool
IMG_0140-X2.jpg

One final pic from Segovia before turning in for the night
IMG_0142-X2.jpg

Tomorrow we head for Santander and the boat to Portsmouth.

Day 9 Segovia to Santander mapsource suggests 229 miles or 3 hours 39 minutes
We have a mid afternoon departure from Santander so decide not to mess about and be on the road at a reasonable hour leaving time in hand at Santander in the hope we can board the Pont Aven:clap early........rain is forecast, lots of rain, biblical rain, we may get lucky and miss some but we're going to get rained on-we know this :comfort
Again, the plan is for John Richard and myself to leave and ride together the whole way while Oscar, cookie & Angi finish their leisurely breakfast , we didn't make it to the city walls together :jes
The route was pretty much motorway all the way, Garmin didn't get it wrong and I nailed it (alone) for 240 miles, the maps must have miscalculated though as Richard later told me he did 290 with Johnny :augie it rained the whole way, biblical stair rod rain, the sort that hits the floor and comes back up 3 feet, my new GS DRY jacket wasn't and it was a miserable journey, broken only once for a pee and fuel
IMG_0146-X2.jpg

The Pont Aven was in dock when I arrived in Santander first.........the rain had stopped and check in had started, we waited on the quayside and just 2 short hours later we were aboard, thanks Brittany Ferries

Overall a great trip and well done all who played a part especially Oscar for organising:bow
Soggy jacket (and i phone 5S) aside my kit worked well, I took too many clothes so could manage with less next time, the Economie ferry to Spain is not for me ever again, the bike performed flawlessly, overall average mpg was 49 overall average speed was 50.3 both over 2300 miles.

Until next year..............:beerjug:

Nicely done chaps.:thumb

Enjoying this, great photo's and yes September/October is a good time to visit Spain.
Cheers John :beerjug:

Well done Steve, thanks for sharing, Segovia looks stunning.
Segovia is worth a visit on it's own Mike a very interesting town :thumby:

The road from Granada to Sierra Nevada ski area is a belter ;)

Your not wrong, was that where "things got a little racy......." as Angie put it ;)

Cracking pictures Steve.....
The best I could manage with my limited skills and resources Ash but some came out ok ;)

Thanks Cookie. I may do a few days that way. I've driven Malaga to Pradallano (the ski resort) a few times but open to a change.
As said above Luke some cracking riding available down there and virtually traffic free, enjoy :thumby:

Looks like a great route and a great trip :) There is so much more to Spain than coast lines and Tosa's and it's actually a far more mountainous country than a lot pop people realise.

Shame about some of the weather, it can be hit and miss that time of the year but still, I think, the best time to go :thumb2

Andres

Fantastic trip and great road. Fantastic pictures. Thanks for posting. Can you share the route if I PM email address? Thanks

It was a great trip, I think we only had rain on 2 occasions so we did really well with the weather, I'd do it again and change very little :thumby:

Most enjoyable Steve, do love Spain away from the coast. Thanks for taking the time to post:thumby:
