Hi, looking to replace my Quest with a 2720 on my new 1200 GSA. I would like to mount on the upper bar in front of the windscreen.

Is it possible to buy the correct power lead from BMW in order that I can plug straight into the bike? If so what lead do I need?

How to mount the unit - Touratech? Ram?

Thank you!

There is a power lead designed for teh BMW Nav III which plugs straight into the loom and the 2720 is basically the same unit. To mount you can either use the Garmin mount plus the BMW mount designed for the Adventure allowing easily removal, or one of the methods you suggest.

The Garmin mount you refer to I assume is part of the unit itself? And you say this just clips into the BMW mount.

I'll get straight onto BMW now!

Thanks for your help Shaun!

The Nav 2 / 3 lead has the Garmin power block, but a completely different connector for the cradle, compared to the Garmin supplied lead audio connection.

Hi John, I don't understand your answer - can I use the BMW cable and mount on the 2720 for my 1200GSA?

Thanks

Yes but, unless you re-engineer the audio plug (ie chop it off and solder up the leads as required) then AFAIK you'll loose the sound unless you use the BM cradle. Another but, the extra buttons won't work on your 2720 :(

BTW ask your dealer about the 1200 GSA specific mount. It clamps onto the upper screen brace and has an over centre lock to allow adjustment of the GPS. The mount works with the BM cradle and the Garmin 2720 mount :)

OK - now even more confused!!......mounts, cradles....!

Here is what I would like to do - I currently have a Quest that I have mounted on the garmin 'bike' mount and I run off it's own built in battery.

The Quest is a bit too small mounted on the upper screen brace so I like the look of the 2720 - I can get it for $386 over here (less than 200 quid!)

So - how to mount neatly. BMW do a mount for $95 that I 'think' will mount the unit to the upper screen brace and thay want a further $135 for the harness. Both this mount and harness are for the Navigator III. Don't really care about the audio on the bike as I don't want an ear piece in my lid. But I would like a neat electrical connection without a 'crude' link direct to the bike battery.

Other option would be to install the extra BMW power outlet and then get a Garmin lead with a BMW plug and plug direct in each time................or.....I could just keep the Quest and squint to see the screen!

Thanks again for your help!

Another idea - this all came about because my dealer has Navigator II going for $700 - but not for the GS (he has R ST, R RT, and K GT) so apparently I will need to spend an extra $95 to get the GSA mount.

But, how does the Navigator II at $700 stand up to a 2720 for $386?

Nav 2 = 2610 = discontinued Garmin model

2720 uses NT mapping (I think :o ) and supports full UK post code searching and POI's ie aural camera warnings.

2610, can't full UK post code search and only is able to show cameras on a map overlay.

If it was me, I'd go for a 2820.

Jon,
I assume you have some RAM parts associated from the Quest which you can re-use ?, if so I need some clues from you ?.

Otherwise.. if search and trawl in this forum, I recall Darkhorse posted some piccies and no doubt you'll discover others.

I tend to favour the LHS side of the clocks on the oval rail, in this set up, RAM-B-14ZA (short arm) with RAP-319 shim adaptor, I would also put a rubber wrap strip around the oval rail. The mount will have a diamond base so is OK for either a RAM or TT cradle, if using the Garmin cradle, it will still work, but ideally the mount needs a round base (RAM-B-202) so all four holes on the cradle mount are used.

Hi jonp i have a 2720 on an 1150. Mounted using a migsel mount (very tidy) and a ram cradle, also use the garmin cradle sometimes because of the security screw but im always afraid of losing the little screwdriver you get with it. I use the garmin bike power lead plugged into the accesory socket as it's so easy to remove when you dont want it on the bike. I used to have the power hard wired to the bike but unless you remove the fuse from the lead you have a permantly live connector which has been known to oxidise the connector pins over time. I think i read somewhere the plug in method, ie accesory socket, plays about on the 1200 because of the 'canbus' system sometimes, so maybe not the best option for you.I'm very happy with the unit top bit of kit, i'd buy again.:thumb

Thanks for all your help folks.

I went with the 2720 and have decided to power it by installing a Powerlet extra outlet panel mounted up front. This means I can have power without canbus and plug in my optimate during the snow season.

I also got the Touratech mount, the Garmin mount and the short Ram mount! (plus the little shim fot the 1/2 inch rail fitting) So I have a choice of fittings.

Thanks again for your help!
