Been offered a 2610, 3 months old for £300 off a friend. What else will I need please to use it on my 1200GS, and is it difficult to fit/waterproof?

Thanks.

John

It is waterproof, and it's very suitable for a motorcycle. You will need to buy a mounting bracket and a power cable for it (both of those are available in a kit from Garmin for about US $50), then you will need to get some kind of third party device to attach the mounting bracket to your motorcycle. RAM makes various bits that can be used for this purpose. Budget about US $100 for the complete motorcycle install. The process is quite simple, it is not at all difficult to install it. You might want to take a look at some installs that other forum members have done, using the same GPSR, before you start in on your own bike.

BTW, check the map version that comes with that GPSR. Version 7 maps are current. If it has earlier version maps (e.g. version 6), you will need to consider the cost of a map upgrade, and adjust your purchase price accordingly.

Michael, thanks very much indeed for that info, much clearer now. I'll be trying to get him down a bit if it only has version 6 on it.

300 quid is a massive bargain for a 3 month old 2610. They are still £550 new. I don't think you'll see much difference between v6 and 7 of the UK maps, if you visit some European countries the later maps have more coverage though.

Seriously, you could resell that unit for £400 in an instant if you wanted to.

If you want a cheap bike power lead, and don't plan on using the unit in your car, you can chop up the car power lead supplied and put a BMW plug on it, or wire it direct to the battery (with fuse).

Its worth a pointer that if your *friend* has registered the product with garmin (eg as a user and for V? updates) you'll need the magic licence number on the coloured slip of paper and then get it transferred (by him) to you otherwise more problems later.

As to mounting, RAM-B-149Z plus RAM-HOL-GA9 and maybe a RAP-319 as it depends where you locate it.

Thanks guys, useful info. I did think the £300 was a bit of a bargain, it is a genuine friend who has been given another GPS as a present. Will need to check out this 'magic' license number though.

Thanks again,

John
