Downloaded the latest Garmin maps for my Zumo and there is a new mapping system called BaseCamp. Mapsource seems to be gone. First impressions are that its not as easy to use as Mapsource but maybe I will find my way around it and come to like it.
Anyone else any thoughts on it???
 
It took me three years to master Mapsource... had a go with Basecamp... it's shite...;)

You had me worried for a minute, it's still there.

I think there would be something of an outrage if they actually removed from their website. They may cease development but from what I've seen of Basecamp (yes, I have it installed and have tried it) Mapsource is far better for my use.

Garmin are pretty useless at UI design, Mapsource has taken years to evolve into its current usable form and it's still quirky. Basecamp is, IMHO, pretty infuriating.
 
I've basecamp on the mac and far prefer Mapsource.

Either I'm a numpty and/or it's useless.

For example, it is remarkably difficult to ask it to "find" a named town. It is also much slower than map source despite being used on an 8 core mac pro!
 
as i use macs, i've not used mapsource for while.

got used to basecamp now, it's ok in most respects once you get used to it, but the Find function hopeless.

it's not slow on either of the imacs i've had it installed on. now RoadTrip, that was positively glacial.
 
Hi all - I have been using Basecamp now since I bought my Mac 3 years ago. The latest version is very good and provides a huge capability but you do have to work with the programme and set it up to get the best out of it. For bike GPS its probably best to turn off the 3D views - easy to do and makes a huge difference to how easy the programme is to use. The Find function is painful but can work better if you adjust the parameters it works to - it only searches within 50 miles of the centre of the screen as a default but can be changed.

So - give it a chance - it can produce very complex routes if you give it a chance but its not intuitive!
 
Always used Mapsource until I got the Mac - downloaded it today and prefer it I think -seems more intuitive
 
Uploaded Basecamp this morning and have been playing/comparing with Mapsource.

It appears some functionality is not available to Mac users :confused:

Planning a route using Motorcycling as the activity sends you all over the place - but I can't see where you can alter the settings, so Automotive becomes your default.

Can't seem to find any cities or postcodes :nenau

Route planning by dragging and the import/export seem to be good improvements.
 
Whilst I am pretty good at Mapsource, I am new to the whole Mac 'experience' and definitely new to Basecamp.

Now that I have it up and running (a tale in itself) Basecamp with the 2012.30 map doesn't seem too bad. Different to Mapsource for sure but with some quite nice features and quick, at least on a decent Mac laptop. Create track from route might be good for exporting, I'm not sure? The 'Selector' tool seems to work really well.

I think I am going to be patient with it and play around a lot. I want to do a lot more 'All the routes you will ever need' files, so these will give me a good opportunity to see how it all goes along. The 'Help' files on the drop down menu seem to be quite good, which is encouraging.

Slowly but surely I am using my old PC less and less it seems. Mapsource was what I was using it mostly for.... If Basecamp cuts the mustard, I am near enough sold; if only Garmin would make some of their set-up / install software and wizards a bit more friendly.
 
Basecamp

I have been copying Mapsource files from my pc to Basecamp on my Mac, which has gone very smoothly... so far :thumb2

One thing I do like is Basecamp's ability to display 'My collection' which opens up all the routes at once, excellent for plotting.

I have a PC and a MAC. I used to use Roadtrip, but got so frustrated with it I had been using Mapsource. Now I am a Basecamp convert. It's easy and fast and can do so much with it.

I agree i am using basecamp more and more ,find mapsource is better and quicker for roads probably because more use to it , but basecamp is great for off roading can see me just using basecamp eventually.
 
I'm obviously a complete muppet! :blast I can't find anything on Basecamp and get very frustrated any time I go near it. :confused: Thanks for the link to the tutorials, I'll give it another go.:thumb
 
the Find function on basecamp is still something of a mystery to me. otherwise, it's pretty good. use it all the time.

I agree..I use Basecamp on my Mac and find that 'search' is pretty poor. I hope Garmin improve it, plus enable postcode search (or is it just that I can't find it?)
