Good ol' Garmin is what I say!

Have had a 550 unit for 4/5yrs now and find it great on the 'bikes. The only problem I have found is the cradle suffers corrosion on 2 of the pins which appear to provide power to the unit - this causes the unit to run on battery power and after a few hours it runs out and I'm lost (As some of you already know!).

I replaced the original craddle from someone on here some 18+months ago and this has now gone the same way.

Despite my best efforts at cleaning/protecting the aforementioned pins it looks like I'm losing the battle again!

Anyway, just been on the phone to Garmin explaining the issue who, believe it or not (and despite the latest cradle being 18mths+ old), said, "Not a problem - there's a new cradle in the post."

Result....one happy Garmin customer:thumb2:thumb2:thumb2

That's good to hear!

I've usually got on well with Garmin, although now all my various units are considered 'obsolete' :blast

I'm no sparky Aiden but can you explain why would that be so? (I assumed it was meant to be a permanent fix ???)¡

IME there has been some very low voltage tracking between pins which causes green gunge and subsequent erosion.

that was common on 2610 cradle connections. not having them powered up, or a smear of silicone grease was the cure.

Thanks Cookie ... sounds similar to what's been happening.

You and Angie keeping well I hope ?

we are. hope to meet up again with you and the lady Pamela again sometime :)

My 550 came free but non working with the bike. ACF-50 sorted out the contact pin corrosion and a Garmin service exchange unit got me a working Sat Nav.

Curses!

Garmin no longer able to get the 550 serviced so, if your unit's playing up as above consider it fooked!

550

Been on to Garmin today with issues I'm having with the unit ... they are no longer able to get replacements in so the service/exchange is no longer available:nenau

Think the corrosion across the +VE and -VE pins is electrolysis. As another poster has said remove the permanent supply and problem will be resolved.
