Hehehe... Good'onya lads
I guess my point is, that the old days of downloading tarballs and knowing "make " inside out to get your machine running are gone. If you would take a computer illitterate person and introduce them to WinXP, MaxOSX or Kubuntu Linux, I think the level of initial confusion would be about the same level. I'm quite confident that the user would eventually learn to use their system to an adequate level regardless of which one of the three chosen. Obviously it's harder to change from a familiar environment/concept to an unfamiliar.
MacOS menu bar at the top vs Windows' at the bottom anyone?
Anyhoo - Linux is quickly becoming a very viable solution on your desktop. The progress is amazing (I remember KDE 1.0), and one day, there will be more people requesting proprietary consumer applications to be available on Linux (and basically any Non-Windows platform).
Having said that, I'm not denying that for "a dozy consumer" WindowsXP is probably the best ever OS produced; if not for usability, then at least for all available software/drivers/accessories/peripherals available.
ianf, I don't mind server talk
and, no Linux is not my religion, in fact, I don't have one
Once again, sorry for the Hi-Jack!
