Just a quick note to say how impressed I am with the Garmin GPS V I bought a week or so back,

I had a superb ride on Sunday just allowing the GPS to help me find my way down teeny-weeny Surrey/Sussex/Hants lanes I've never been down before. I had loaded the "local" detailed maps for the area onto the unit before setting off.

It really opened up my biking world which is just outside my door. And it also showed what a cool bike the GS is for trundling around the country. An excellent pairing in my view.

Glad you're getting on with it. I actually preffered my GPS V to the Streetpilot. Apart from the obvious lack of memory the GPS V is much better for bike use. The screen on my Streetpilot is all but useless in daylight and the unit is far too big, battery life is a pain away from the vehicle as well.

Grumble over :D

Sorry but I totally disagree on the Streetpilot gripes, I've used mine with a clear visor, and tinted last year in Southern Spain,French Alps, a trip to Assen in rain and shine, and in every light condition screen was perfect after minor adjustments and colour/contrast is FULLY adjustable.

I know it is but the reflection off the screen means mine is virtually unusable. we've been riding round the Peak district today, the weather was overcast and I still couldn't see for the reflection. I know Mark rodgers was having the same problem because he was trying to shield the screen with his hand.

The streetpilot is a brilliant piece of kit when I use it in my car. on the bike it partially hides the idiot lights (I can live with that), the display is a pain and the battery life makes it awkward to play around with away from the bike. All just small niggles I know and the only one that really concerns me is the display, If I can find something to cure the problem I will be really pleased with it.

Just a question on screen viewability;
what mount are you using ?

I am guessing that the RAM mount users are complaining less because they have more adjustability on the position and angle.

Something else to consider when purchasing.

that would explain why his missus was picking the bike up, he had to attand to sunsheild duties:rolleyes:

well I'm just back from 5 weeks thru Sth Australia on a F650 with a GPSV, had temp of 48 deg in places, never had any trouble reading screen, is that cos of ram mount ?

I think Burnie has made a very sharp observation.

If you're going to mount a GPSR on a moto, be sure that your mount allows you to adjust the tilt up and down quite considerably.

I just finished a 500 mile ride today, eastbound all the way, with brilliant sun shining from behind me all the time. An adjustment of 20 or 30 degrees of tilt on my SP 2650 made the difference between not being able to see anything at all, and being able to read it without any difficulty at all.

Here's a photo of my installation (using a Ram-Mount and the Garmin bracket)

Im a happy chappy too...

... I have a Garmin V and its soooper!
Have two touratech mounts, one on GSA other on KLX off roader.
No problems from either.
Use the KLX option to record trails on 'lead rides' etc and download it at home onto a master map...getting a really good catalogue of legal lanes together.
On the flip side...being a country bumpkin.... I used it on GSA to 'cut through' London last weekend on the way to Brands...just to alleviate the M25 boredom.
Well pleased.:)

I dont have the Garmin V but just to add
I was In Belgium with Chris G who used His Garmin V all the time
most inpressed

or was it just Chris and his sense of direction

Just got my Garmin V

Used mine for the first time today in the car and was really pleased with it as well.

All I need to do now is get myself sorted with a power cable for the bike (any suggestions) and a ram mount and holder.

I called Touratech and for all of the above they were asking for £130 - more than 1/3 of the cost of the unit!

So would I be alright with just a RAM mount and the Garmin bike holder clamp?

I have a spare RAM mount for a V that fits a GS. This is the U bolt that clamps to the handlebars, the adjustable double clamp plus the ball and cradle - £20 + p+p if you're interested. This is far more secure than just using the Garmin holder.

As for power cable, you can get a pDp0 from Lynks Cables for the grand sum of £12.45. Don't forget to fit a 0.5A inline fuse.

Thanks

Adamski49 - I found another post in the depths of this forum about mounts and a link to a website the gps warehouse - described as a "1 x U-Bolt Mount for Garmin GPS II/III/V Series" so I've gone and ordered one. Would have been interested though! I ride a Yam Fazer but have renthal bars so don't know if it would have fitted. Sounds like I've ordered the same thing as you've got?

All the same, thanks v much and also thanks for the link to get the cable. I also found some info on here about them and it seems most people had just wired them directly to the battery with an in line fuse rather than hard wiring into the bikes circuit.
