You have probably answered this question a 1000 times

BUT

If I buy an American Garmin GPS can I change/convert/upload/update for UK and possible European Usage

Thanks

You cannot update the internal basemap. North American models use the Americas Autoroute basemap and the European models use the Atlantic Autoroute basemap. Since you live in the area covered by the European basemap, you will be best served by a GPS with the European (Atlantic) basemap.

You can purchase European software coverage for the North American models that will provide detailed map coverage from 5 miles and under (5,3,2, etc). Above 5 miles you see nothing but country boundries, dots for major cities.

You can load the European stuff without problems. Since I've never used the base map in mine, I don't think it matters one jot.

All you'll need if you do buy an American one, is a good mate who has a European one. Register your American one in his name and you'll get an unlock code for your unit to use his CD-ROMs. 'swot a friend of mine did with me as best mate.
