My understanding is that Garmin software is only for PC and does not run on Apple Mac.

Does anyone have experience on Mac or know of a resource out there?

Terry

I spoke to Garmin on this subject before buying my latest laptop. They have no plans to make a Mac compatible version of the software and say that you can run it through a PC emulator if needed. From my understanding of Mac this will be more trouble than it was worth.

Running my Garmin is a small, but essential, part of the job my laptop has to do, which is a shame, as I quite fancy converting to Mac otherwise.

Mike:)

I have a Mac G5 and a Powerbook G4. Virtual PC is a disaster - very, very slow and cumbersome and in any case the Garmin USB will not work on the Mac ports.
I keep the PC just for Garmin.

Thanks for all your inputs.

So I will have to keep this memorial to Bill Gates doubtful business practices.

I have an iMac G4 running MAC OS 10.3 and Virtual PC 6. I have no problem at all running the Mapsource software, I'm currently running version 6.5 under Windows 2000.

It's not as fast as it would be on Windows 2000 on a PC but emulators rarely are.

I have no problem with the Mac detecting my Garmin 2610 and no problem updating it either.

Works perfectly!:D

In fact Im updating the unit at the moment whilst surfing using Safari.

That is really good news. I have a iMac G5 in transit and will try to do as you have done. Forgive my ignorance, but does the emulator come preinstalled or is it a retro download? And must I then install Windows on the Mac?

Terry.

The point is I think that it will work, but not as quick as on a PC.

I personaly rarely use mapsource on my PC. Just load the maps and go...

If however you like to spend hours planning routes etc it could become tiresome...

Terry,

Virtual PC is a third party product, now owned by Misrosoft surprisingly.

You then load Windows on top of it.

2000 is fine but XP may be a bit too slow.

Agree with Jon I use an iMac G4 and Powerbook G4 both running Mac OS 10.3.8 and use Virtual PC 6 with Win 2000 and have no problems. My powerbook is an older model and is a little slow but am happy enough using the iMac. But I am also like Ritchie and rarely use Mapsource. I have loaded all of Spain, Portugal and France on a 512MB card and so for now have no need of anything else.

Just a quicky, but 4 years on what's the consensus on this?

My boy is talking of getting s Mac to replace the steam driven version PC we have currently.

Would Mapsource work now?

no.

but Road Trip does. sort of.

So "RoadTrip" is just a Mac compatible version of Mapsource? :nenau

It does the same job ( I reckon) but looks completely different. I personally can do everything I need to do on route planning/waypoints etc on road trip that I recall doing on Mapsource, and now I'm used to it I wouldn't want to go back :thumb

I'm completely happy with Road Trip on the Mac :thumb Planned last years trip to Slovakia etc on it and it was fine :Motomartin

i use it in preference to using a pc or fusion on the mac for mapsource.

it is missing some mapsource features, postcodes for a start, can be very slow, and is just plain weird to use, but it works. sort of.

might be nice when it's finished, but garmin are very clearly in no hurry to do that.
