But have John's guests been offered 2015 maps with GE with a 550/660 or are they all Nav V / 590 users?

Answer to that is I can't be certain. The first one was a Nav V, in fact the first such device I got my hands on. He had updated to 2015 just before his trip and told me that he had done this, no mention of versions as far as I remember. Since then we have had a few through with the 2015 mapping but as it does appear to cause any problems I have not noted which devices were on the 2015 mapping..

If your theory is correct there will be no 550/660 units with 2015 NTU maps

That's is correct 550/660. Nav 4. All on NT maps next update 2015.2

New models Nav 5 / 590 all on the new format NTU. Updating every quarter so already have 2015.1

Hence Op's problem I suspect that he updated his unit to Nav 5 from Nav 4 and basecamp just couldn't cope with change hence delete redo and everything working as it should

Now that makes more sense, our dirt cheap car device also got updated to 2015.1 but then the navigation part of it looks and works the same as the mega expensive Nav V as far as I can see.

Try doing a re install and see what happens !
