Garmin Maps update

Basecamp., two Nuvis and one Nav V successfully updated this evening and quick with no problems. Bizarre but I'm getting 20mb/sec downloads tonight .

Seems to confirm the points I put before the committee in post #8 of this thread.
Now might be a good time for me to upgrade, now the rush is over .... :D

Having messed around with an 8MB card I thought feck it and bought a 32GB Sandisk Ultra 48MB/sec read for £15 on Amazon.

Not only has all the European map updated and loaded no problem, it has transformed my Zumo 660. Previously it used to hang when searching locations/loading routes. Now its 'proper' fast ;)

Good news - that's exactly what I ordered :)

Well I bit the bullet and bought the Lifetime Updates package and tonight I went for the download of 2015.40 to my 660. It all went well and even survived an interruption when the 660 became disconnected from the laptop due to the screensaver kicking in:blast (note to self - must disable it next time I do an update) I reconnected and the download just continued from where it left off. It took a long time, probably about four hours in total but no problems and it all worked as it should. ;)

I updated the maps yesterday evening. 1st attempt failed after 3 hours, 2nd attempt went through after 25 minutes.
I have a 32GB Memory card in my Nav V but the Hard disk is now showing as 99.8% full.
I recall seeing threads on here about cleaning up the Hard disk so I'm going to have a look for those & see if I can do it.

Edit: I found the link but it's more complicated than a complicated thing

I've contacted Garmin Support to see if they can help..........

You can free up space on your device by deleting voice files, text files, help files, vehicle icons and JPEG pictures.
Before you start please ensure you have the device connected to the computer via a USB cable and then please follow the steps below.
Windows:
1. Click start
2. Click on Computer
3. Open the garmin drive
4. Open the garmin folder (Some devices can skip this step)
5. Open the Voice, Text, Help, Vehicle, or JPEG folder
6. Click on the languages that you do not use and delete
7. Press the Delete key on your computer keyboard
8. You may be prompted to confirm that you want to delete the file
9. Select Yes to confirm
10. Now complete steps 6 to 9 for the remaining folders

I've had a further e-mither from Garmin.

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.
I am happy to help you, we do not design our units to be future proof and this includes mapping updates. The new mapping has a lot of extra detail and this means that it has increased the size of the file to that which is greater than previous year’s increases. This larger file means that you can vary the region of the mapping on the unit depending on the space you have available. You will need an SD/SDHC Card to load all of Europe to the device.
Your unit can read both standard SD cards and the SDHC cards. The maximum card size that you can use is 32GB and you also need to make sure that the unit is running on the latest version of software.
PLEASE NOTE: nuvi 3xx/6xx devices cannot read files larger than 2GB so make sure you do not send over any files larger than 2GB.

Playing devil's advocate - why would want to 'future-proof' a device?

Garmin give you the choice of selecting the regions you're most likely to drive/ride through, and you can select accordingly. Seems a fair choice to me.
Plus, there's a large percentage of us who don't have lightning fast download speed on our broadband and that makes a huge difference, too.

Did you go for the Handtec or Garmin version in the end? I'm just wondering what the differences are before I take the plunge.
