i would dispute his comments as correct the guy obviously dont know the product!!

a lot of guys love their quests ..

at a guess i would say its coverage ie detailed streets in northern ireland would be poor

so would you or anyone else on this site recomend one?new to this gps thing  so looking for advise.

There is nothing wrong with the Quests coverage of N. Ireland, at street level, it is as good as the rest of the UK and Europe. But you'll not find any software that has good coverage of S Ireland, don't ask me why. The sales guy was obviously trying to sell you another 'better' product as he did me. I am very happy with my Quest, and am glad that I did not take their advice and buy a Garmin 320 (similar price), as my dad did, or I'd have been very disappointed as the coverage at street level on the unit, only covers to the North coast of France. That's as far as it goes, and then its the base map for the rest of Europe. Where as on the Quest all you have to do is go back to the mapsource CD rom(which you don't get with the 320), and upload all the street level you want right thru to Eastern Europe.
All Garmin products would appear to use the City select or City navigator software, (I am sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong). Depending on the unit you purchase, depends whether, you get a CD rom Mapsource or not.
I really wasn't interested in all the 3D fancy touch screen business, but what ever floats your boat....Good Luck :thumb

Oh I!, should have said it at the start. The sales guy is talking absolute bollocks....either hasn't a clue or he has to promote someother product this month...TWATS!

Quest 1 is fine for N Ireland, coverage in RoI isn't so good at present but it is believed that the next version (v.8.0) of the software will address that to some extent. Plenty of memory for Europe as well.

You're unlikely to find Quest 1 here now though, Quest 2 will be along shortly which is alleged to be even better, but more expensive. If you show up at any forthcoming Norn Iron GSer meet, somebody will have a unit for you to play with.

Give me a street name in a town in NI and I'll see if I can find it on the mapping that comes with the Quest :)

The coverage in Nothern Ireland has nothing to do with the Quest itself. It is the map that is the important thing.

The current map version for the Quest is V7 and this one has very poor coverage in some parts of Northern Ireland. The next version, V8, has very good coverage in Northern Ireland. V8 is currently delivered with the Quest2 but very soon also with the Quest. :type

Version 7

My Quest has led me to hotels in Galway, osteopaths in Tralee, navigated me thru' the Dublin maze, routed me from Limerick to Belfast without going thru' Dublin. It will locate my parents' house In Belfast and my inlaws abode.
Version 7 even has the Southern Ring road around Limerick and has included the rural road to my house. I've used it to find Photo Rally locations in all parts of Ireland and while all roads, lanes and boreens are not mapped, some of the detail can be surprising such as the route it used to take me from Macroom to home - I traversed roads that I have never been on in 30+ tears of biking throughout Ireland.
It is a remarkable piece of kit, very dependable but a valuable aid to a map and some common sense planning before hand.
I haven't bother with the bike power lead or audio and the battery when charged is more that adequate for an 8 hour ride out.
The track function is very good when on unmapped forestry roads.
Buy it you, won't regret it

Michael, only bought mine at Xmas, came with version 6, coverage down south is atrocious, 2 roads in Donegal for example, trying to find some one at present that will let me use their V7. although there is good street level of the main cities only.

Whatton, No not a trick question, just pleased you found it, nice furniture shop in it.

I seem to recall that some people are getting v8 NT with their new buys - Nuvi, 2720, Quest 2, things like that. :nenau
