Garmin refuses to import a route

Well this is embarrassing, so firstly thank you so much to everyone for your help in sorting this.

I am the official UKGSER Garmin idiot

Last year I didn't go abroad due to daughter and son-in law's wedding, I also had Garmin troubles so changed the map region to UK and Ireland only... and forgot. Hence why the unit could not calculate the route.

Unit updated with European maps and all is good

I am reminded of a time when a bikermate got split from the group joining the motorway in Northern France. (We went south, he north) No worries, we texted, meet at McD's Laon. It was ages until he rolled up - he'd "updated" his Garmin the night before - & deleted all his Euro maps

It's not a waste of time. I always learn something new from attempting to help (or not in some cases). Learning from yesterday was that loading the big GPX file stripped the alerting (Flag,Hand, via, waypoints) when loading the file into MyRoute app but not Basecamp. If the individual days were split and sent as individual files to MyRoute app from Basecamp the Via (Hand) points and their descriptions/notes were retained. So if I'm transferring routes from basecamp to MyRoute app I now know one at a time is the best way and if I'm sent/obtain a GPX file containing a multi day trip filter it through basecamp first to avoid having to "fix" the Hand/Flag Via points.............oh and make sure that the maps required are on the GPS

Indeed so. I have learned all sorts of things (much of it useful) from these pages and the MyRoute forum.

They are odd devices. Very simple on one level and complex on another.

It was quite funny that the OP’s problem lay on the ‘simple level’ (ie. Do you have a map installed?) though understandably frustrating for the OP.

I guess it would be possible for Garmin to insert a warning screen saying “Yo, mate, you’ve got no maps installed. You try doing it without a map, you Tosser!’ or words to that effect.
