I have just picked up a used but very clean Zumo 660 and want to register it with Garmin (UK) to download a newer software upgrade (mine is currently showing vs 3.90). But here is the problem.

I plug in the unit with the supplied USB cable and the computer shows that both the unit and the SD card are installed and contents visible. So far so good. But when I go onto the Garmin site, log-in and start the registration process, all that I get is the rotating time wheel and no amount of waiting gets me any further .

I gave Garmin Support a call and they suggested trying an alternate USB cable (done and no different) and then another computer (same result). Now I am flummoxed and so are they. So any ideas please?

I've got a Garmin program called Web Updater installed, which seems to be a standalone app to update software etc. I haven't had to use it for updating my Z220 but it is possible that the update through the Garmin web site needs some components of Web Updater to be installed. It might be worth downloading and running Web Updater to see if it fixes the problem.

Will it allow you to register it in your name if it is still registered to the previous owner?

I agree, the previous owner has to De-register it for you to be able to register it yourself.

Thanks for the advice everyone......as it happens, I woke up this morning with the sudden thought that maybe the problem was because my anti-virus programme was being way to vigilant. So I disabled it and managed to get the Garmin site to recognise the 660 at last :D.

Then I updated the software and bought the latest maps and speed camera database which it appears you can do even though you are not the registered owner . Anyhow, whilst the very long download was going on, I spoke to Garmin customer services again who checked my file history going back several years. On the basis of this, they manually registered the device in my name :thumb2.

So that's me happy and now I just need the postie to deliver my Touratech Lockable Mount V 2.0 and I can fit it up and plug it all in.

Did you know if the original owner had bothered to register it? Did you try just adding the device to your account? Sad though it seems some Zumo owners never bother to unwrap the DVD, register or anything other than mount the GPS and enter a postcode, my cousin is one such example. Don't know what they're missing out on...

I bought a Quest in 2008, before I knew much about Garmins, their mapping, unlock codes etc. This was from a pawn broker so no contact with the original owner. Luckily it have never been registered and despite being a couple of years old I was recognised as the first owner by Garmin and got a free map update. Garmin don't do that any more, you have 90 days from first satellite fix, presumably checked on-line with your GPS connected to the PC via USB.

It seems that the original owner, being computer illiterate, had his son register the device and had 'forgotten' about it. So when I plugged in the serial number to try and work out WTF was going on, it came up as already registered. Which is where I started from......:thumb2

re zumo 660

hi oldrascal
i have just fitted a tt v2 mount a great bit of kit but if your going to fit it to the screen bar of a gsa you will need two fit two longer screws on the top part of the mount as the four standard screws are not long enough to fit over bracket
otherwise as i said a great piece of kit
regards keith

Hey Keith.......:thumb2. I already have the Touratech extension bracket fitted to my GSA's screen bar. I previously had the Navigator 4 with its TT lockable mount and it was a nightmare trying to make that fit the standard bar. I nearly took the windscreen off before realising how much easier the TT kit makes it :D.
