i wounder if any one can help me with a problem? i have bought a garmin 2610 unit and want to use it in a bmw cradle but the buttons on the cradle dont work! i have been told it could be a soft ware issue and was wondering if any one know of a way round it??

many thanks for your time

AFAIK, the Garmin 2610 is incompatible with the BMW mount. I think they did this on purpose to stop people just buying the mount and then buying the cheaper 2610.

I was told by my dealer that you couldn't buy the BMW cradle on it's own........?

What happens if you want to share your BMW Nav II between two BMW bikes........

Bad move, methinks.....

Price

I was told by Williams that I could buy the cradle but I'd have to buy the BMW power lead to get the sound into the autocom. All for the bargain price of £250. At that point I decided that the ease of use possible with Nav 2 cradle wasn't worth the cost.

The BMW power lead takes four wires via the round plug into the extra button half of the mount.
This for IN,OUT,ESCAPE and ENTER.
The sound output is also on the bottom just below the four buttons.
It would depend on which power lead you were using.
The Garmin lead has an audio output but does not have the round four pin connector to power the four buttons.

There were some postings on different forums 3-4 months ago saying the BMW button pad would not work with the SP2610. Seems Garmin disabled it in firmware.

Either power cable will work with the other unit.
The BMW cable has an extra plug (same as 276C) that plugs into the pad.

Kenny, is the BMW power lead fused? If the GPS is on a 1200 will the bikes electrics be so clever that a fuse in the GPS line isn't needed? Questions, questions.

Acoording to the Adventuring Motorcycling site the extra buttons aren't much benefit for the 2610,
These extra buttons were pretty useful on the StreetPilot III and BMW Navigator 1. The processor and the screen refresh speed were such that sometimes the information the rider required was not on screen at the right time, so the rider would use the zoom keys whilst on the move. The StreetPilot 2610/Navigator 2 does not suffer with the same problem... we advise you will not need or miss the zoom facility.
Another suggestion I read was to velcro the 2610's remote control to the top of the fluid containers on the handlebars.

My understanding is that the cradles are individually coded to the units - a bit like the unlock codes in the mapping software. BMW will sell you a new cradle to replace a stolen one, number matched.

Presumably, they'd sell you a second cradle, Dutch, if you wanted to put it on a second bike...

Mike:)

ps I hardly use the extra buttons - the touch screen is pretty useable, even with my salami-sized fingers encased in winter gloves...

thanks every one for your replies i will have to sell the garmin and get the bmw unit if i want the buttons to work!

many thanks every one

Fitted to 1150.

The BMW plug is fitted with a 2amp fuse.
When I wire it to the battery I will fit an inline 2 amp fuse.
The connectors at the gps end are more exposed than they were on the Nav1 and could short out if they touched the handle bars when the gps is off the bike.

The Nav 1 official wiring harness took a feed from the back of the power socket and did not have an inline fuse.
