I don't know what the current 'going' rate is for the SPIII D/L, but have just seen it in Maplins in TCR (with all the usual d/l gubbins) at £999.

Seems a good price to me!

Greg

NB Usual disclaimers.

Go to your BMW dealer and tell them what you have seen it at, you should get it cheaper, I did !

All very well but you do not get anything to mount it in a car when buying the BMW one. You do with the SP III D/L.
£££ for SP III D/L
GPS World £979
Offroad store £999 (inc remote aerial worth £50)

Don't upset me anymore - that's less than I paid, and I thought that I got a bargain!

SP3 Bits and pieces

Only had the SP3 for a couple of days but what a picece of kit. Looking forward to riding in and aroud French towns and thier "helpfull" toutes directions signs. Has anyone any experience of the Touratech locable mount and using an Autocom "Eurocom" for the spoken commands? The Advrider site mentions $115 dollars for an Autocom lead which seems a bit steep!

John,

I've got the Autocom lead feeding the sound from the SPlll into the Autocom, & the Garmin lead feeding power from an 'always live' fused powersource to the SPlll. The Autcom lead, which works well, has a circuit board built into it & is expensive (I think it's meant to be about £30, but they made a mistake with mine & undercharged me:D - City Slicker poo-pooed the cost of this in a previous thread, suggesting that the board should only cost £1 or so - he may be worth contacting if he's produced an alternative).

The power lead is connected to an 'always live' circuit so that you can program & generally mess about with the GPS when you're stopped without having to worry about battery life (which, as you may have found out, can be very short!).

I use the standard, non locked, Touratech mount. I though about ugrading to the lockable one, but realised that, if I considered the unit was at risk, I'd take it off the bike and take it with me anyway....

Consider buying the carrying bag thing. It does a good job of protecting the unit and comes with loops on the outside to hold spare batteries and compartments to hold all your cables - not cheap, but good value IMHO.

Mike's spot-on with with every word he's said above - the hard-wiring, battery life, Touratech mount, taking it off when parked, the bag etc.

I haven't yet bought the Autocom lead, as I'm trying to wean myself off the voice prompts anyway.

Greg

PS City Slicker is away.

I've been considerering the lockable only in that at petrol stations etc it'll make someone think twice about removing it. At longer stops I'd remove the GPS, partly for looking at the next days excitment, but mainly due to the worries of somebody nicking it.

Thanks for the other advice about the Autocom, £30 is not too bad after all the other expense.

John, £30 might not seem bad but as Mike pointed out they got the price wrong, more like £42, and if you're looking to incorporate phone/spIII/music and intercom you'll need another lead as well, all in it cost £75-ish!!! :spitfire

Oh no more expense

Best I don't bother with the phone hook up! Anyway having music, the GPS and she who must be obeyed will be enough distraction!

John,

as regards securing the SPlll at petrol stations, I use the standard Touratech mount and the knurled bolt which holds it into the mount. This takes about 20 secs to undo, which should be sufficient to deter opportunists as described. That said, if the locking one is only slightly more expensive, I'd suggest you go for it as it IS a visible deterrent.

I actually paid under £20 for the £42 cable - :D - RESULT!

Can't live without voice prompts now - when I get home, I'm never able to find the house if 'Bitching Betty' doesn't tell me that 'it's on the right'..... If you intend to use it to navigate in cities, voice prompting is invaluable, IMHO.

MikeO:)

Bitching betty

It certainly free's up some of the senses ie eyes, and beats looking down at maps, road books etc. Wether the better half gets upset with another "woman" talking to me all the time I've yet to find out!

:D :D
