I have had a zumo 550 for a few years now and am still learning things about it, but overall i really like it,however for a computer numpty like me i find the garmin software less than simple.I Have had lifetime updates since i bought the 550 but I have struggled with map source ,then basecamp, now garmin express, garmin plug in communicator, the list goes on.All i want to do is plug in the 550 and update the maps for the whole of Europe and any soft ware updates at the same time.I don't want to have battle whith it every time theirs an update.Last years trip to France and germany was a disaster as regards the sat nav, as most of the mapping was not there.I have just tried to download the latest maps and again i've had a right battle with it.Why is it so hard, I don't need to save routes our show a route,I just need to be able to enter a address or place on the satnav itself and the 550 give me route.Sorry about the rant but iv got better things to do than spend all night trying to update maps only to be told update complete but with errors.:beerjug:

You've probably had a problem when downloading the latest maps because the memory isn't big enough to take all of Europe, as it wasn't last time and probably the time before for all I know.

I agree with you it is IMHO very poor of Garmin to not foresee that future maps would only get bigger and put in a decent sized memory to allow for upgrades.

I have deleted everything I can off mine I don't need and can still only get part of Europe on the memory.

Have you thought about downloading the mapping to an SD card (not sure what size you will need but shouldn't be difficult to find out the size of the mapping and go from there) then run it from that. I haven't but others do, so might be worth a try.

Or do what I did and just download part of the mapping....it is far from ideal as you can't make up a bespoke mapset and are governed by whatever Garmin allow you to choose along with the UK.

Try the card. :thumb2

garmin memory

Hi
I had exactly the same problem and used a 16 g card for updates and also for music. Has solved the problem of the very limited memory, as you said there is really no excuse for not being able to update internally.

Jasper,

As I said I haven't gone down the 'card route'.

Are you saying it is possible to download mapping AND music to the card and use it as if mapping was on the unit and music on the card?........i.e. Mapping and voice prompts as usual with music cutting in when no prompts are required.

If you see what I mean.
