Hi everyone. My first post ! I've read that many of you have had one zumo problem or another, but I can't seem to find one just like mine. I'm hoping however that at least one of you will recognise the symptoms and be able to suggest a solution.
I've always had problems with the map updates but sooner or later have managed to get them done. Today was no exception after the third attempt.
However, once completed, I transferred Route & Waypoint data from MapSource on my PC to my device. Then I found I had duplicated routes, but that some of them couldn't be imported because they were too big. I eliminated old routes from MapSource, cleaned up the rest by breaking them into shorter sections and then deleted ALL routes and waypoints from the device with the intention of starting again with a "clean slate". I connected up the device, did the data transfer from the PC - supposedly successfully, safely disconnected the device and re-opened it...... only to find that there were no routes nor waypoints anywhere on it. I repeated the exercise with the same result..... even trying to Import New Data (but there was no data to import). I tried a third time with an even worse result. The device now turns itself off as soon as the Home page opens.... and, yes, the battery is fully charged. I'm due to undertake a 2,000 mile trip through France, Belgium & Luxembourg commencing the 27th December...... with all my routes in MapSource and nothing on a device that auto-shuts-off as soon as it's warmed up! Are there any magicians out there?:nenau

Hmm - it is strange. Not that I have the answer, but when I try to import a route the Zumo 660 is converting from 0-100% and suddenly it stops on e.g. 97%. It will stay there for several minutes, and then suddenly - again - it completes the import.
On my Zumo 550 it is not a problem, so my best guess is that the Zumo 660 has some software bugs. Just to let you know, I am using www.tourstart.org to plan my routes and download, but the transfer is done with the Garmin Communicator a Garmin tool.
I am not fully aware if you have lost any data?
Please, allow me to give info how it is on Tourstart. Here you can make as many tours as you like, and keep them private or public, so you can at any time download all the tours to your Garmin GPS, which means data are never lost.

When I plan my holiday motorcycle routes, I save them on Tourstart as a private tour. Then I use my 10.1" PC when at the hotel (sorry - I do not fancy the tents anymore...) and then I can play with the routes and transfer the next days route - while perhaps enjoying a cold beer :-)

Daedalus, instead of using Mapsource to transfer routes, try using Mapsource 'file save as' command to save your routes as a GPX file. Then copy this file onto the SD card in your 660, in a folder <root>\Garmin\gpx\<route.gpx>.

You can then import the routes onto the 660 using My Data, if the machine does not automatically recognise that it has new files to import. The beauty of this method is that you always have a copy of the routes on your SD card to re-import in case things go wrong on the tour.

If a hard reset fails to fix the 660 you could try deleting the files current.gpx and temp.gpx that are in the 660 system memory. Make a copy of the files first onto your PC. They hold the routes you have loaded so far, so might be corrupted.

Open the Zumo as a drive in Windows Explorer and right click > properties. How much free space is there on the internal memory?

From what I've experienced they do require a bit of 'cat swinging space' in there to operate properly. I try to leave at least 200MB. The latest mapping updates for full Europe can just be shoehorned onto the internal memory but you need to clear quite a bit out to make this possible.

Plus 1 for that - I put only British Isles, France, Spain & Portugal on internal memory and the remainder of Europe on the SD card. This doesn't seem to materially / noticeably affect performance but does leave acres of free internal memory for any caching / temporary file storage / whatever that the device might need to do.
