Well i just thought i'd share with you the fact ive already booked-up my first European trip and first BMW Event to Garmisch in 2012 for me and the bird.

5 days thurs 5th july to tues 10th July.

Morning Chunnel (Our 1st) crossing (£60 return) on thurs, then overnight stop in Koblenz (68Eur B&B), arriving Garmisch fri eve.
3 nights at Olympiahaus. (297Eur B&B)
Depart mon for overnight stop in Koblenz again (68Eur B&B), late eve Chunnel back to UK.

Not bad for £420 aprox. Although thats not including fuel/grub/beer :beerjug:

I anticipate 5-6hrs riding a day with 3 breaks of around 45mins.

Cant wait!!! See you there :thumb2

Incidentally, i thoroughly recommend hotel bookings through activehotels.com - most of the accomodation requires no or little upfront costs and can be secured using a credit card. I have used them over and over before and find them 100% reliable and convenient. Indeed i am using them for hotels on the west cost Ireland at the end of this month :)

You'll have a great time... but remember to factor in twice as much money for food/beer/fuel as you thought you'd need, then you won't be shocked at the high prices ...... 4 euro for a beer, 9.50 for two crappy coffees out of an urn , and 1 small bit of flan at the meet last month

A word of caution

Activehotels gather information from other sites, they have our place listed but the information is wrong on several counts. We have contacted them saying that we have not asked to be on their site and would they kindly update the info as we don't want any potential guest mislead. We just get a standard reply to the effect that they are not responsible for the info!

Best advice is if you find a place on Activehotels or any other such site check to see if the hotel has it's own website. You might just find that the prices are better that way.

And remember that such sites as Activehotels, Booking.com etc are not lists of recommended places, people pay to have their hotels there. In the case of Booking.com you can opt to pay a higher commision and then they will place your hotel higher on their ratings.

I have used activehotels.com for years. Last weekend we returned from a 5 day break in Albufueira having used them. June and July i used them to stay in Torquay. Last year we went to Rome, Ireland and Ibiza. At the end of this month we are heading to Galway, September Ibiza again. Never had any problems nor ever been mislead.

There are various ways of listing what you want including distance from your search town, cheapest room, cheapest double etc.

Activehotels & booking.com are the same company.

Was just trying to share a site ive used over and over and found very good. I guess it was inevitable somebody would come along and disagree. :comfort

That's not what I said!

I do not disagree at all, we are on Booking.com ourselves and in a previous life I have used such sites often to find hotels. I was just sharing my experience that often you can contact the hotel direct and get a better deal-they are then not paying the commission to whoever so may be able to be flexible. You can also then ask questions, do you have secure bike parking? etc. Thought that might be useful to some that's all.

Activehotels and booking.com might be the same company but they have our place in two different positions! We can get Booking.com to correct any errors/omissions but Activehotels can't/won't change anything.

Koblenz is (IMHO) probably the least attractive town/city on that part of the Rhein/Mosel. I see you're booked there both ways. The likes of Rüdesheim, Oberwessel and Bacharach am Rhein are much nicer places to stop off.

To break up the monotony of riding on Autobahns, why don't you ride along the banks of the Rhein on your way out of or back to Koblenz? The route between say Bingen and Koblenz is really lovely and picturesque.

Thanks for the info, i will look into it. To be honest i dont really know nor have much experience of Germany.

I picked Koblenz basically by looking at a map and estimating half way :)

Not a bad way to pick somewhere to stop off at :thumb2

Koblenz is worth a visit but it's a big(ish) place and a bit tired looking (again IMHO). It's where the Rhein and Mosel rivers meet at Deutsche Eck (German Corner) and that's well worth visiting.

If you google image some of the towns I've mentioned or some other villages along the banks of the Rhein, you'll get an idea of how picturesque this area is. :beerjug:

Feel free to PM me if you'd like any more info. I'm no expert but I know the area fairly well.

Am I missing something, but when I checked the map the route between Dover and Garmisch-Partenkirchen goes nowhere near Koblenz, or rather there are some much nicer parts of Germany which are closer to the direct route. (Baden Baden, Sigmaringen, Lindou, Biberach an der riss, Tuttlingen, Breisach am Rhein, Schaffhausen etc etc).

Was Koblenz chosen on the route out and back because you have friends there or something?

I used viamichelin.com as a basic route planner for the quickest route and that is where is took me - Dunkerque to Garmisch. Its also completely Toll free :D

To be honest i want to find a happy medium of a relatively swift transit with as much scenery as possible and just one overnight stop.

Changed my outbound overnight stay to a nice little hotel in Oberwessel. Your advice taken

Cheers

Hmmn can anybody advise whereabouts in Garmisch the activities/event (particularly the beer tent) takes place and located? The hotel we have picked seems a bit far out on the maps. Its the Olympiahaus near the Ski Jumps.

Is this going to be a taxi &/or stagger home for miles job?
