Gasket sealant

Anyof you well informed chaps know which sealant I should use to refit my nice new refinished front engine cover. Went into our local bike dealer they sell this wurth stuff 28 quid for a can full. wow that is mighty expensive trys BMW dealer they just the same. I await your most informed responces Chars:D

the original is a silicone rubber sealant of some sort. I'd checkout loctite products such as 5910 especially as you can get it in Halfords.

One word - HYLOMAR!

I've been a pro wrench for over 40 years and nothing else I've tried even comes close. Car, boat, bike & aircraft engines & accessories. Gas, oil, coolant. It doesn't matter. The standard blue type works best all around, and you can peel old gaskets off like bandaids in most cases, even after years of service, when doing future repairs.

Hylomar, great on older engines or ones with decent tolerances. Unfortunatly this probably doesn't include GS's. Another vote for loctite.

Well. I have to say you're right about that. If parts are so poorly made and tolerances are so large that regular gaskets and seals don't work, then a glue-like sealant is the only other alternative. :nenau

I've never worked on a Beemer, and never will. I was just assuming that they were manufactured to decent tolerances. Apparently that's not the case. :(

Anyway, good luck with the silicone sealant. If you can seal up quarter-inch gaps on bathtubs and the like, it should work on a Beemer motor. :D

LOCTITE 574 FLANGE SEALANT did mine 18 months ago,perfect.

thats cos hylomar was originally designed for rolls Royce jet engines:thumb2

Right you are! As far as I know, that's the only sealant approved for some applications on RR engines to this day .
 
Erm...you may have a problem that goes somewhat beyond your choice of sealant :augie

Cheers Lads iused Loctite to fit the cover and it was really good. Only down side was it was black, but easily cleaned away. the bike looks as new now many thanks again Dave.:D
 
The stuff BMW currently use is called Dow Corning and you can by it from your dealer

The other product that RR recommended was a horrible substance (s**t) called "Wellseal" .... we even had it in aerosol format..:eek:

I don't think though that RR still recommend Hylomar as their engines are built by yours truly ......BM.

i remember wellseal,,,,it didnt.
RR probably dont now, im going back over 20 years since i had anything to do with jets, i find hylomar is thinner now and not as good
 
Wellseal works great on tin head gaskets and is the best you can buy for that. As ever with whatever sealer you use, use the right one for the job. They all have different properties and mostly work well for what they are meant to. Personally I hate silicon sealants especially in the wrong hands. I have seen to many dead engines caused by some monkey slavering the stuff all over the place only for it to end up in the oil pump with obvious results. If sealant squeezed out the joint when you tightened it together then you have done it wrong. It will also have squeezed out the inside as well and with use it will break off, work round the engine and eventually if there is enough will find its way to the pump blocking it.
 
Have a huge pile of Hylomar and Wellseal on the racks at work. All gathering dust whilst everyone uses the loctite silicon sealant.

Don't think i've seen anyone using Wellseal in years.

Hylomar only really gets used with cork (I know!) gaskets.
 
As noted by Marki Wellseal was devised for either face to face jointing (no gasket) or on steel shim head gaskets.
I used two aerosol cans of it last year when i rebuilt the top end of a Rolls 265L Eagle diesel. as stated in the RR technical manual 1, can applied liberally to both sides of the shim...... horrid stuff to remove once set & stinks like a dry cleaners when applying it
