Hi, anyone know how to remove the gear assist pro unit from the R1200GS ? I want to clean mine up but it doesn’t seem to want to come off. I’ve removed the centre bolt and the linkage but it seems the unit won’t pull off the shaft .

Thanks

Be very careful trying to get it off the shaft as there’s a very fragile bush about the size of a thimble, think eggshell fragile DAMHIK. The replacement only cost 8 Euros and much hassle.

Here you go.

So it seems that the unit on mine is stuck, I wanted to get it off as it seems the down shift isn't working properly, and I read that you can clean the unit out where it attracts bits of crud and metal around the magnetic sensor.

Looking at the diagram above, does the unit pull off and leave the splined sleeve on the gear shaft ? or does it all pull off together ? I guess on mine the sleeve is stuck to the actual splined gear change shaft otherwise the unit would pull off and leave the thimble like collar on the gear change shaft ?

I've tried gently (and a bit more) prising it from behind but I don't want to damage it.

Looking at the picture, does the bolt screw into the end of the gear change shaft of the bike, clamping the whole unit and collar in place ?

Thanks

Hi Mat, if I remember correctly, I just used a large flat head screwdriver to get it off, and it broke the bush. At the time I didn’t have the diagram, so I had no idea that the bush was there. I tried to post a photo of the broken bush but for some reason it wouldn’t load, that would give you a better idea of what you’re up against. The photo of the bush in the unit is of the new bush.

I was doing the same as you, getting it off to clean the magnetic plate, but when I finally got it off and broke the bush it was clean, and I needn’t have bothered.

I will try again to post the photo of the broken bush. I sent a error code to Tapatalk last night when it wouldn’t load, fingers crossed they have fixed the problem.

Success, this gives you a better idea of how easy it is to break it.

You could try to do a reset of the gear shift pro, there’s a post somewhere on here that takes you through the process. Good luck...

Hi Rockred, thanks for the info.

So does the bush push in from the back of the unit, and then the complete assembly slides onto the gear change shaft ? I mean for example does the bush just push into the unit easily ? I'm trying to work out where mine is stuck, as I can't understand why :

a) the unit wont pull off and leave the bush stuck on the splined gear shaft of the bike, this would be the easiest way as I'm sure the bush could then be soaked in WD40 or similar and would be easier to get off ? Does the bush somehow screw down into the unit itself from the back side, that's why I can't just pull the unit off the bush, leaving it on the gear change shaft ? maybe I can twist the unit to get it apart from the bush ?
b) the whole lot wont pull off and leave the bush is stuck in the unit itself

At the moment it seems both are stuck because I removed the bolt and nothing pulls off.

I think I'll just put it back together, clean the linkage and lever joints and then order the bush and try again later.

I'll try resetting the adaptations using my Motoscan tool and then re-calibrate/reset it using the procedure I read.

Thanks

Mat

Hi Mat,

On reassembley the new bush was inserted into the unit, it was then very gently pushed into place using one finger, there was no resistance and it seated easily. Then just slid the gear change shaft very carefully back into the unit.

Yours seems to be more stubborn than mine, I think putting it back together would be my advice, and then do a reset to see if that helps with the downshift issues.

Good luck..:thumb2

OK thanks for that, so it seems both parts should be free to pull of each other.... either the unit should pull free of the bush or the whole lot should come off the gear change shaft altogether. So mine must be stuck on both parts.

I'll put it back for now and get the bush, then get it apart and clean it and reassemble with some copper grease on the splines

Thanks

Mat

It looks like the bush is a tapered collet which pulls the lever tight to the shaft when the bolt is tightened. I think that I would loosen the bolt and use careful and judicious wiggling to pull it apart

Hi Smug, yes I also got round to thinking that, the bush is slightly conical, I did try wiggling it around. It would probably come off easy with a smaller puller, but the frame is in the way. I'll leave it until winter when I don't ride much so I've got more time to look at it further.
