Hi guys,

I know there is a fair amount of information about gear sensor and indicator randomness on the site but I can't find the exact answers to my questions, so here we go...

My gear indicator has for years (one or twice a year) gone random, a wiggle on the sensor plug and some WD-40 has always sorted it.

However after the winters lay up the wiggle and WD-40 solution has not resolved the problem. I have not removed the plug yet to check the connectors...

1st question - how to remove the plug? A simple question (but I am not a simple chap and quite competent but I don't want to break it). Is it a screwdriver underneath from the back - can some one post a photo of the action.

2nd question - if I need to change the sensor, will removing it result in gear oil release or can the sensor be changed without loss of oil? Can it be removed without removing the swing arm? Any other tips?

Is the sensor expensive?

Many thanks
Rupert

cannot help with the questions but would advise you do a few hundred miles before you start pulling it apart, I had the same for a while, once I got some miles on the bike again it sorted itself

bizarrely once also it played up until the day i changed the gearbox oil, maybe the level is relevant or maybe its just another quirk!!

Easy to remove the plug- just be gentle with a screwdriver. As for removal- easy but very fiddly. You just need the correct torx spanner and small fingers. It also doesnt result in the loss of any oil.

If you do replace it might not work first time- mine didn't. I needed to take it to Southport Superbikes to reset it- 2 mins and as I bought the part from them and took it back there was no charge.

Same here

I've bought a replacement switch and now that I've got the correct spanner (need a new tool for EVERY new task....) I'm gonna change it soon as I get back home. Having the bike cut out on sidestand all the time is a PITA. I'll try to put the switch on with the gear in Neutral, but we'll see how it goes.

Maybe I should've got a new seal for the switch too? Should I cake it in ACF-50, lads?

Patrick.

I've heard that dielectric silicone grease on the connector helps

Thanks for all the advice, I think I will purchase a new o-ring seal with the sensor :beerjug:

worth covering the connector in grease or acf50, this is where most of the problems lie as water gets into the wiring and the connector, later bikes had a flying lead from the sensor which allowed the connector to be tucked further away from this exposed area

one day I may even heatshrink mine (after filling it with sealer etc), might save me self some cans of wd!

If you have big hands its a bugger to get the the sensor off,the bolts are in an awkward postion. Took me about an hour of struggling and swearing (swearing always helps alot) oh and you have to get at the bolts from both sides of the bike. I would buy a hugger to keep the crap off it in the first place....
