Bit of a stupid question perhaps but fitting the gear change lever to my G/S and as i hadn't removed it nor had i powder coated the frame so i need confirmation on its fitting. There is a circular lug welded to the frame (guessing this is the pivot) that the gear change fits over. Mines tight but thats perhaps the powder coating holding it off

I think that there is a bronze bush in the lever.

Dont rely on just the powder coating making it just a good fit.

Yeh there is a bronze type bush in there for the pivot bolt its just a very tight fit onto what i think is the locating peg and the reason i think is the powder coating covered it so before i go cutting it of i just wanted to check that it slips over onto it
Not the best at explaining ... sorry`

It doesn’t slip over any part of the frame just the pivot bolt,
There should be an o ring either side of the gear lever as well,
There are two different sizes of lever and pivot bolt .
Iirc pre 85 is the narrow one, post 85 is the wider one.
Your not mixing early and late parts are you?

Turned up a new bush as mine was all over the place on my 80. 12mm interior, 14mm exterior IIRC. Works fine now, only thing is the rod connecting to the gearbox is only just long enough if you have low footrests - must sort that out!

This is the detail you need - you can find part # for the pivot bolt, o-rings and needle roller at :

https://shop.maxbmw.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51623&rnd=07242017

Then search your preferred parts supplier - Motorworks, MotoBins, Sherlock etc.

You may need to run an M10 x 1.5 tap through the frame lug to clear the threads.

Hi and sorry for getting back on a bit late, i will take a picture and try to work out how to post is up. Pretty sure its the correct lever well lets put it this way its been painted same colour as the frame and this was how i got it. Now C H has put up a diagram I may be able to explain better.

The main lever item 10 looks identical to mine and item 10 where it locates on the frame it is machined out on the inner face on mine approx 8mm ish and this looks like it will fit over what i call a Boss that is welded to my frame with a tapped centre hole for item 12 the bolt to attach too

I will try and load up some pics
Thanks all

Yep.

The bronze bush 13, is pressed into 10.

Item 12 passes through the bush (grease needed) and screws into threaded fitting brazed on frame.

The bush then pivots on the plain diameter of item 12.

The lever should not be pivoting on the brazed on fitting.

Suggest that you replace 12, 13 and 14x2. They are wearing parts.

You can easily check for wear on the pivot bolt - this is unlikely as the bronze bush is sacrificial.

Also, the pivot bolt is around £16, and the bush £9

This G/S came in large lumps and boxes so I appreciate your help guys massively never owning a BMW before & only working from Haynes manual and internet which is a wealth of knowledge but doesnt always capture small normaly stupidly easy bits to refit :blast

I will make it a must to get my head round posting pics - promis
