HI all,

After 8 months ownership, it has become apparent that the XChallenge has a problem. The gear lever sticks out, and doesn't have much in the way of protection.

On nearly all other off road bikes the gear lever is protected tucking it in behind the clutch casing/ engine case.

I've fitted the old F650 gear lever to prevent the selector shaft getting ripped off if the lever catches on anything, but i still haven't found anything that will give the lever some protection, so that in deep ruts it doesn't end up wrapped back under the foot peg, like mine has done twice :(

So whats the answer? Does the TT large bash plate offer more protection or is this just marginal??

Having just fitted both I would say marginal, something could still get at it. Sounds like the G650X ever is a little too soft (I had to bend mine before fitting, was kicking out too much).

Not sure personally it's any more exposed than on anthing else, but dont know really.

Try Thumpers section on advrider, lots of G650X stuff, thread index a good place to start.

I've the TT adjustable one on mine which is OK'ish but still looks to strong. I've also got my hands on an orginal which has been down the road so the ends worn down a touch.

My plan is to drill this to weaken it and hope the worn down end is less prone to catching

Since I said its not that bad I've rethunk it and it is a bit sticky outey, and no the big WUnderlich plate wont help much but then massive one with tool storage would as above. I am going to remove my F650 one and bend in a little (probably weakening it so it will be like butter:rolleyes:). I am also going to drill the stocker and put under the seat as a trail spare.

I wonder if those twig snake thingys might be a help?

The TT adjustable on is the way to go, it's much softer than the shaft. I've had mine Z-shaped before now. I also keep the original (drilled) as a spare in my back pack.
