Is there a rubber seal behind the bolt that holds this lever to the gearbox as mine has started leaking gear oil.

I can't see anything listed in the manual at all that says there is one?

Photo attached shows the problem....

Any advice welcome

There's an oil seal that can be easily prised out and replaced. Just lay the bike on its right side first otherwise you'll dump the gearbox oil.

So...I replaced the rubber seal and re-assembled the linkage etc. gave the bike a run and made sure everything was as tight as needed.

Next day it was still seeping out!!!:nenau :nenau

Anyone any ideas?

What was the gear lever shaft like ?? I have seen some that are scored and therefore unlikely to seal properly.

The seal has a fair amount of room in the case (in and out that is). It may be possible to re-position it to bear on an unworn part of the shaft.

I use a smear of jointing compound around the outer circumference of the oil seal to make sure it isn't leaking between seal and case - did you ??

I'm usually fitting seals to boxes that have been re-built and are therefore bone dry. Did you still have oil around the case when you put the seal in. It shouldn't matter but would prevent jointing compound working properly.

Thanks Bob, I didn't use any jointing compound but noticed when I removed the old one that it had some on it!

I'll take it out again and try using some (making sure there's no oil around it first)

Thanks
Nick

OK...I'm at a loss... Drained it, used jointing compound and..it still weeps!!

Shaft looked fine, not scored at all. Bike's not a "high miler" so wouldn't have though it needs renewing, any thoughts?

Currently replacing the shifter shaft seal on one of my bikes and was told to use Blue Hylomar on the outer diameter of the seal. A pal is also dressing the shaft before reassembly as there was some minor scoring which would just cause the problem to reappear.

Is the gearbox breathing OK - if its not, it could be pressurising when warm and pushing the oil out.

The battery earthing strap bolt that also locks the speedo cable into the box should be hollow - do you have this (Assuming its a 'Para' - 'Monos' breath into the leg) ??

Are you using EP90 GL5 gear oil in the box - lighter grades will be more prone to leak ??

Clutching at straws now :augie.

Mine weeps on and off. Had the little rubber thing changed several times.

I think the last time stopped it for now. I'm sure it will start again whilst I'm not looking. :blast

Yep....using EP90 oil....interesting point about the earthing strap....what difference will that make?

I"ll check it out, as the electrics have been adjusted recently.

The gearbox breathing is ok, I held a mirror up to it after my last run and it steamed up....:jibberbig:D:D:D:D

We spray a little oil on it for a laugh every time your at the Cafe Hockney. It's only stopped because you haven't been down for a while :D

Just to go back a bit, have you been able to ascertain whether the leak is from the outer or inner part of the seal?

The bolt holding the battery earthing strap to the gearbox, the one that also locates the speedo drive, is not just any old bolt. It's got a small hole down the middle of it, that's the breather for the gearbox. Sometimes it can get blocked and when the gearbox warms up the increase in pressure results in the oil leaking out past the gearchange seal.

Could be true, I've been on the RT the last few times. That permanently leaks from everywhere.
