Gear Linkage Circlip

Whilst cleaning the bike today I accidently knocked the gear linkage causing it to come appart from the upper ball and socket joint!!! I poped it back to gether and it seems to work ok but checking on a parts fiche I can see two circlips...one at the top and one at the bottom.

The one at the bottom is there however the one at the top is missing and obviously has been for some time. I'm suprised it stayed together.

Will it be ok to use like for the time being or am i asking for trouble?

Its booked in for a service 16th May, will it stay together?

Are the clips essentialor safety critical?

Replace the missing clip before you go out again.
