New GSa, 2 weeks old, got caught in an almighty downpour this morning and lost my Gear Select Indicator, at one point riding on the M1 at 70mph with the Neutral light on.

Rode home in dry this evening and everything seems ok apart from 6th doesn't show on the selector, but I can use it, and occasionally I loose the number of which gear I am in

This seems a common fault with GS's, is it a question of finding the switch, and drying/cleanin it, or more ?

Give the switch wires a good blast with WD m8, it's right behind the gearbox, black plastic cover with the wires coming out of it. Mine did this once or twice in very heavy rain, but it's been fine since, and I use it every day. Either that or it's a dealer fix, sorry :)

2 weeks old... Back to the dealer and a new switch.

I had exactly the same problem. - SBW replaced the potentiometer under warranty. It's been fine since then.

They have been doing this since the 1200GS first came out in 2004 - what the hell is wrong with BMW?

I had the same problem about 2 years ago just after I bought my bike - the dealer fixed it and it has been fine ever since. This is, without question, just another sign of poor quality control during manufacture, either it is low quality parts or as I suspect just poor assembly that somehow lets water get into the gear position sensor.

Update

Superb service from Allan Jefferies, phone them yesterday and they said bring the bike in today, so pop round at lunch time.

Bike taken straight into workshop, 30 minutes later returned. Apparently the computer had crashed, just needed resyncing with the gears.

Rode home in a total downpour 2nite and not a problem

Cool
