Gear selection.

I`ve just fitted a new, fancy gear lever to my R100Gs and very nice it looks too.
However, sometimes a down shift is difficult. There feels to be a lack of movement, usually from 2nd into first.
When I first fitted it I had to shorten the selector rod a little as first gear was
difficult to engage.
Is there a distance that should be set between the gear lever and the actuating arm i.e, a correct length for the selector rod ?

is it catching the exhaust? or is the stud which secures it to the frame too tight. I put one on mine and it stiffened up after a couple of days so i lossedned it put thread locker on and did it up but not as tight as previously now ok.

Might be worth checking that the ball joints and cups are not corroded/gunged-up. Clean and re grease perhaps ?
Selector could possibly catch against the engine mounting bar end too.

I dont think there is a set distance between the gear lever and actuating arm as people adjust this distance depending on the size of their boots. Was it difficult to change gear with the old set up or just the same? If the same then possible worn roller on the camplate index lever. The roller is nylon and if its worn could give change difficulties.

Thanks for the replies. I`ve lubricated the ball/socket assemblies and this has improved matters no end.
I`ve also paid a bit of attention to my left foot. I`ve a feeling that I was "riding" the lever a bit and stopping it from re-centring.
Might be me getting a bit slack or just a slightly different pedal position.
