Gear selector staying down...help please.

Any reason why when I change down my gear shift is not returning to the neutral position all the time? Just about due my 24K service if that is of any help? Bike has got a bit of crud on it from the winter, on top of the ACF50 or whatever it's called.

Not sure if this is right (I can see the queue to put me right forming already) but a wise gent on a well used GS in the NorthOxford dealership car park told me to regularly put some oil on the fibre bush thingie at the base of the gear selector. He said the cat can harden it with the heat and once its gone it will eventually freeze the selector. Dont know if its true but I drop some oil on the thing whenever I clean the bike. Might be that.
Sorry I cant be of more help but I have the technical knowledge of someone with no technical knowledge.

Disassemble the linkage and lever and give it a good greasing, sure that will sort it out.
If it's not that then I would assume there is some kind of broken return springy type thingy in there.
Go with the grease and smile if it sorts it out.

Very common problem.


It's where the lever pivots.

There's a bush in the lever and it's all crudded up.

if you've a Y piece fitted you can undo the gearlever pivot bolt with the footrest hanger still attached to the bike , and clean the bush and lever.


If you've the cat fitted there's no room to get an allen key behind the lever, so the hanger has to come off, then you'll realise why it's easier removing the lever with it all still attached to the bike.

Just spraying it with WD40 or a drop of oil, doesn't get to the bush inside the lever. Do it properly, and you only do it the once .

Had exactly the same prob with mine before x mas, take it off completely, clean it all properly, copious amounts of copaslip put it back together perfect.
Do not try and just spray it with WD as it wont cure it, it is a 20 min job

I work for the Government and I can assure you sir we do not have leaks.
We have a huge variety of vegetables, many of whom are in positions of authority but sadly no leaks.
Springy is allowed, it is derived from the Greek springious. It means in between winter and summer.

If you can while it's off put a grease nipple on the pivot housing use this grease and the problem will never re-occur. Undoing this pivot bolt is a serious bit of work as it is TIGHT locktited in so get a decent allen key and be prepared.

To those of you who posted a reply, thanks. I must admit the lack of a key to remove the top bolt of the foot rest hanger and the fact the back wheel is not on the bike at the moment have meant I've taken the lazy option! 1st I soaked it in WD40, then booked it in with this fella http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?p=922441#post922441 because I want to give some work to a guy who's just starting out.
He knows all about the problem and is going to do the bush replacement when he does my 24K in a couple of weeks.

Why is this still a prob, 30mins work and it's done (or less) If he's going to fit a bush ? tell him to fit a grease nipple at the same time or you will be back to square one when a bit of wet riding takes place.
