OK. I know i am potentially gong to open a can of worms here, but GSAP, I just don't get it. I ve got 2017 R1200 GS TE bought from new in July, supposedly with GSAP specced, but every time I try to use it is seems very harsh and clunky, and feels like you are having to force the lever to select the next gear, not very smooth at all, and can certainly do smoother gear changes with the clutch, but not quicker

I did read / see on some reviews that on new bikes the operation gets smoother with miles. But i'm up to 4,000 miles now, and only seems marginally better on the upshifts, but not at all on the downshifts. Definately doesn't auto blip on the down shift with throttle closed, at least not that I can perceive.

I am starting to wonder, a) Is it working properly, b) was it set up properly on pdi by the supplying dealer? Does it need some sort of enabling at dealer pdi, or is it factory set? c) Is it me, i'm not using it properly, or not used to it, or d) are my expectations of a smooth shift just to high?

Its shit on the GS, strangely better on the 1200r and 1200rs, don't understand why but I've tried it on all 3 models and the GS is the worst.

I suppose it takes time to get used to, I use it now and again on my 2017 GS1200 it feels snatchier on the downshift, but I like it in the twisties.

I have had gearshift assist pro on my 15 + 17 plate GS's, the 15 plate was terrible as you say I really had to put a lot of effort into the changes and it never got better in the 14k miles I had the bike:blast

My 17 plate is much better although not as good as the 17 plate GSA I tested before I got my GS:rolleyes:

Saying that though the quick shifter on my K1300R was much better:cool:

Curzon, the GS pro is not perfect for the GS compared to some others I've tried, Ducati Supersport and BMW S1000XR, but better than I read your experience.
Downshifts - Should be done with a closed throttle e.g. entering a corner or road junction. Mine is great in these situations and auto blips so well I probably change down more often that strictly necessary because I love to listen to the blip. and use the brakes less.
Upshifts - Should be done while accelerating and don't try to alter the throttle during the change or you'll affect/worsen the experience. It's too jerky on 1st to 2nd so I use the clutch for that change. To be frank, for smoothness I usually use the clutch on upshifts unless I'm really going for it.
The one thing I lost on the change from a 2016 Euro 3 GS to a 2017 Euro 4 GS was the lovely pop from the exhaust during upshifts, so the incentive to use GS Pro for upshifts is less.
If you still feel the same after following the above maybe get the dealer to check it out.

Thanks for the replies above. Some do seem to confirm my concerns. I was going to get the dealer to check it out at the 6000 mile service. Can't be arsed to do anything about it until then, and can certainly live without it until then, if that is how it is supposed to be.

Had it on my 2014 not getting it on my new bike , why because it is clunky crap !

I had it on my 2015 GS and found it rather clunky.

Better if you are accelerating hard on up shifts and make sure you are on a closed throttle on down shifts.

Makes a nice auto blip on down shifts.

I didn't bother with it on my 2017 E4 GS as really did not use it much on the last bike. Frankly most of the time I just forgot to use it as I do clutchless upshifts most of the time anyway.

As woody has said, you need to be accelerating reasonably hard , and passed 4000 revs, I only use it from 3rd to 4th to 5th to 6th

And down through the same gears. Mine is a 2015 GS and has never blipped the throttle on down shifts. I close the throttle make the down shift and at the same time blip the throttle manually.

It has improved a lot. It was clunky on my '14 GSA, but good fun on my '17 GSA, and silky smooth up and down through the gears on my K1600GT. Great fun to be had with it when using it assertively :thumb

SHIFT ASSIST

HI , Do go back to your dealership and explain your dissatisfaction, ask them to re configure the parameters , or put in the latest software , i am sure they will sort it very quickly.
Mine was crap , until they got a technician who understood the fault and plugged in the laptop.

Personally I really like it on my '16. Works great all the way down through the box and from 3-6 going up. There definitely seems to be a knack to using it. It doesn't like going down if the revs are too low. I love going from 3rd down to 1st when approaching lights. Get some really nice pops and gargling from the exhaust.

Just in case............

Have a close look at the underside of the clutch lever, at the pivot. There are two micro-switches that are quite delicate. One might have been dislodged?

a good torch will assist.

R1200GSA Gear Shift Assist

This is how I use it.

No hardship at all. Turn up your speakers and have a listen to the revs etc...

Thats exactly what I have to do seems so wrong, 4th 5th and 6th at speed is very good

I highly rate the GSApro on my 2016 R1200GS it works just like in Warlords video. If it does not work like that it probably needs some attention.

I find I have to be quite snappy with the changes (up and down). It does not like the gear lever being pre-loaded. I tend to use it more for short shifting than when I am giving it the beans. I just have too much mechanical sympathy!! There is definitely a knack to getting it right for smooth shifting.

Works well shortshifting and when revving the balls off it. I think you need to be making it work to get the best. Stretch the metaphorical wire a bit more. On downshift usually good as well, just need to press hard. I do find you need increased pedal pressure, makes my ankle ache after a long ride through the twisties.
