Gear Shift Assist

has anyone got the gearshift assist on there bike yet and does it work thinking of going down the hm route had one on my RC8R and it was brilliant

Big Derek and Mick have them, and are euphoric about them.:thumb

I still don't get why you need Gear Shift Assist.

What is so hard about using clutch and easing the throttle during a gear change?

What am I missing?

You are, indeed, missing the point.:comfort:D

Of course they are....they spent 16 grand on a new bike with one of these gadgets on it.......if they weren't euphoric, they'd be sobbing ;)

Quick shift, modes, widgets to tell you that your tyre is flat, anti locking, anti wheely, anti thinking, so many superb gadgets these days.

Fekking wonderful

I agree that a lot of it, we could do without, but yesterday the tyre pressure monitor paid for itself.

I left home, tyres were fine, then I checked the pressure after about 10 minutes (while riding), and the rear had dropped 0.5 bar. When I stopped at a petrol station, there was a nail in the tyre. I was able to pump it up, and limp on, keeping an eye on the pressure. We then plugged the tyre, and I was able to keep an eye on the pressure afterwards, without stopping every 5 minutes to make sure it hadn't gone down.

Now, I'm sure that bods have, and will cope without this witchcraft, but yesterday, it was a godsend.

In the old days you'd be able to tell you were loosing pressure by 'the seat of your pants' :rob

What happened to sensory perception and knowing and feeling what the bike is doing under you ? A lost art is seems if you need a shedload of gizmo,s to tell you :eek
A pound or two down on pressure on the tractor tyres soon lets me know through the handling dept all is not well.
I suppose if you are launching yourself at hyperspeed pro assist nirvarna you need to know in a nannosecond its only flat at the bottom :D

Ps ask Steptoe about the trip back from Skye with the rear tyre he refused to change or give up repairing :augie

i've had a think about it and i can recall one section of one ride in the last 3 years where i could really have used a quick shift. so for me, it doesn't seem like something i would want.

an auto gearbox on a GS though? yes please :)

LOL Bit more than £16k! but anyway RE:this gear shifter lark , all i can say is i too didn't think it was going to be something i really needed? but as my mate Tosser Saw said "lets give em a go" we did. Yes we are very pleased with them. Yesterday we rode 1780 miles with our gang and all i can honestly say No u don't need one yes u can use clutch like i have been doing for 45 years!!! But this little shift thing is just buckets of FUN for the rider it puts a huge grin on my face. You do have to retrain the brain a little but going down the box dropping a couple of gears is so nice and smooth and sounds great, then going up at around 6,000rpm from 4th to 5th and 6th its wonderful. I am a person if it was shit i would say so and bin it! But its giving me heaps of fun so far, maybe you get bored after a while who knows , who gives fook it wasn't fortune at £400... with the new Akra its sweet. So far enjoying my new shed "Olive" its like 5 bikes in one:-) Each to their own eh!

Tosser Saw taking piss out of ":Olive"

Yesterdays Gang !

Love the matt wheels too :-)

Hi there, sorry no idea what the gear shift assist devices you have talked about are as never used before. Anyway my advice for anyone contemplating this would be to visit your nearest BMW dealer and test ride one of the demo R1200RT's just out as most are LE version with pro shift assist fitted so you can have a go and see what you think. I have an 08GSA and did test ride the new RT last week with pro shift and not something I personally would upgrade to, maybe when refined a bit. Very different to what I expected, up-change - must be under acceleration, harder the better to go up gears, best 3rd upwards, 1st and 2nd too close. Down-shift, much better but need fully closed throttle so usually under braking here. If you want to change gear at constant speed then doesn't work. Def not semi auto, you really do need try it first, am sure some riders will like it but not for me.

hi derek what are the quickshifters like on downshifts i have had them before on my sports bikes and you had to use the clutch for downshift
cheers
steve

They are fine usually from 6 5 4th but you will have to learn the method :-)))
