Okay so I am kind of new to BMs, I have got the 1200 gs wc with the gear shift pro.

At first it worked like a dream the odd miss the odd surge as you would expect changing under load.
Today just came back from a leisurely ride but I am having to put a lot of pressure on the shift in order to get
it to shift up or down so much so I think it might snap off ?

Any ideas what could be wrong ?

Thanks in advance

Does it do the same with the clutch pulled in?

Doesn't sound like a prob with the GSP - as you can generally snick up a gear without GSP or clutch on a bike, by just backing off the throttle a bit.

Sounds like your gear selector is jammed/seized inside the box?

Mine sometimes feels like lifting a brick, rock solid & I have to use the clutch or try again. I've removed the Pivot Pegz and it's made it easier, but 1>2 is a no no, 2>3 isn't much better.
Sometimes it just glides in. Mainly 5>6 other times it won't move. Not often but too often.

I love stamping down the gears with the GSAP as I tip into corners, feel like Troy Bayliss

My 14 year GS was the same. You could change gear using the clutch without having to use much force on the gear shift but when wanting to use the gear shift pro you'd have to use a huge amount of force which in my opinion was wrong and would put a huge unnecessary strain on the gearbox. My thoughts were that electric sensor on the gear change was not sensing movement and cutting the engine power allowing a change. BMW looked at mine several times and said it was OK but I thought it was rubbish.

I'd has quick shifters on a 1300s and S1000RR before the GS which were great so the GS was a real disappointment.

I have it on a XR now and this works very well.

Only done 1000 miles. Currently in the Picos and beginning to believe high revs for up changes improve the change quality. But clutchless change, shutting throttle, are smooth and snick snick.......why have I got GCA?, lol.

Thanks for your replys it does seem like an issue with the box and the engine drops a pot when you change gear. I will pop it back to Northampton BMW let them take a look at it. I do agree if you have to use too much force its just not a smooth ride and becomes a little tedious. It only happened on the way home yesterday so will pop out for a spin later just in case the sensor needed to be reset. As for the false neutrals people get I have had a few of those too.

Thanks again

Hello all and thanks for your input so far.

Here is an update on the gear shift issue.

Ride for around 6-7 miles then it stops working I then have to turn off the engine then it works fine again for a lot longer ????
strange but true. Yesterday I went for a trip it stopped working so while I was riding i pulled in the clutch turned off the engine then back on got my pro working again ?????

Any ideas ?????

As you've already suggested yourself get it back to the dealer for them to take a look at. If by Northampton BMW you mean Wollaston BMW, they're a good bunch in the service dept. and will help get it sorted.

It has to learn how you ride.! After a service mine stops working but after say 20 miles (occasionally a lot longer) it's back to normal again.
More likely a software update is needed or last one wasn't installed correctly.
I've had a few issues when it was first fitted 2 years ago but finally now it's very good.

The way I understand the system is that there is a micro switch in the clutch lever that disables the GSAP when you pull the clutch in. If that were faulty that might cause the issue? And a good pull on the clutch might "unstick" that microswirch allowing the GSAP to function again.

Mine's a 2016 bike and the GSAP was good but not brilliant , I could always change up or down right through 1 - 6 or 6 - 1 but if was sometimes a bit jerky

Had the 10,000 km service a couple of weeks ago and the GSAP has improved greatly, it's a lot smoother now, especially up shifts which seem to cut the motor for a shorter time

Dealer didn't mention anything but I think it had a software update

I had a 2014 GSLC and the Gear Shifter which never worked very well. I could change gear without the clutch in the 'usual way' but when doing so using the Gear Shifter I had to use very excessive force to get it to change.

My thoughts are that the sensor in the gear shift leaver wasn't sensitive enough. It didn't help that the gearbox itself was horrible.

If I could have adjust the sensitivity of the switch mechanism I'm sure it would have been much better.

After having fantastic quick shifters on a K1300s and S1000RR it was a real let down.

I now have it on a XR and it's great

Friday - Had my 2016 GS in for fog light and they did GSAP software update. Made a real difference much smoother up and down.
