Gearbox and FD oil

Ask Mikey or Steptoe

just remember the hexhead is a tractor, not an F1 stallion

Just look for the spec in the handbook, and match it, unless advised otherwise

and as far as i can remember its `180ml in the rear hub

As suitable Castrol oil seems to be unavailable at the moment do you guys think this meets the bill, I think it does and with free delivery at the moment I’m tempted to place an order.

I had been trying to buy some syntrax 75/90 for a while, couldn't find any available. I finally found a supplier online that listed it. It was £24.99 a litre so bit the bullet and ordered anyway. Got an email from them apologising saying it was out of stock. They were hoping to get new stock soon.
A delivery finally came a month later containing transmax oil. Not what I ordered at all. Freely available for much less money. This oil is also a gl4 oil. The GSA should use a gl5 oil. I had no record of where I ordered it from as such and they didn't put a receipt in the box. I'm stuck with 2 litres I can't use that cost me £50.00
I'm interested in what people suggest too as I'm overdue to change mine.

BMW FD is straight GL5 spec

that first one you posted is a Hybrid gl4 / gl5

I would recommend GL5 ONLY

Viscosity not that important

BUt I have now gone for 85W140 GL5 for all my FDs

it's gear oil 75/90 fully synth any brand will do even Halfords as long as it's GL5, i use Motul why is there a shortage?

Halfords do some comma fd oil for around a tenner a litre gL5 spec.

This is certainly good enough for the GS. spending 25 quid provides no benefit apart from emptying your wallet.

I purchased a litre for under £9 with a halfords trade card. I also use it as chain lube on another motorcycle

Castrol Transmax Manual Transaxle Fluid 75W-90, 1 Litre £16.50 on Amazon. A litre does the gearbox and FD

Heads Up

WARNING GL4 spec! Well GL4+

But it ain't GL5 so I would not recommend

Agreed. See my post above. I have 2 litres of transmax I didn't order

Interesting - a wee Google around ,indicates that the GL 5 variant has twice the quantity of EP ( extreme pressure ) additives , which is probably why it costs a bit more .

Might not be relevant to the FD or gearbox but GL4 can attack "gold metals" such as brass/bronze therefore best to stick to the GL5 specification unless otherwise stated.

(I can't recall seeing any brass or bronze components in the gearbox or FD but I wouldn't use a GL4 spec oil in them.)

I've been using the Transmax universal LL for two years now... Was in Italy, couldn't find anything else. Did some research and made a couple of calls...

That was two years ago and I've done just shy of 20k miles... Oil is clear when I change it (that's when the water is it of it anyway ).

It says it covers GL5 spec. I would have expected trouble by now if it was no good? No?
