Gearbox and final drive oil

Opie Oils sell Transmax; Enought to do the gear box and the final drive.

That Transmax is GL4

BMW Specify GL5* ! (*Well Dry plate transmissions for sure )

I can why Oil threads are so tedious now!!

Just put something Thick and Gloopy with a GL5 spec in there and have done with !!

You are not racing it with high torque lash and harsh changes every time

Transmax that I mentioned and posted a picture of is GL5. This is a picture of the data label on the rear of the container.

The BMW service schedule says to use Castrol SAF-XO. That is no longer available and was replaced by Syntrax, which apparently has now been replaced by Transmax. These are all synthetic 75W90 GL5.

You can put whatever you want in your bike, I will stick to the OEM recommended oil, or its successor.

So anyone wanting to buy Transmax should double-triple check they are getting GL-5.

For DrFarkoff's benefit (to liven up the discussion) I thought Transmax was a a word used in the LGBGTQ+ community for a person who had 'gone the whole hog'.

FFS, now I need to try and work out if I bought the right oil or just can't copy and paste a link properly - or maybe it's both!

BTW thank you Dr F for pointing it out!

Someone in the Castrol marketing department has gone all inclusive, to keep up with the modern trends.

Right, so having messed up / practiced with the wrong oil I now need to do the job properly with GL5.

Is this the right one? https://www.motorworks.co.uk/gear-oil-oia11019-1.html It says 80w 90 GL5.

(I'll buy from Motorworks or BMW because I need a new O ring for the rear drive drain plug too)

Thanks for your patience and especially a big thank you to Dr Farkoff who has probably saved me a hefty reardrive rebuild.

I realise this is now an old thread but was just wondering.... everyone seems to be using the Castrol Transmax in either 75-90 or 75-140 but I’m seeing another product: Castrol MTX 75-140 which is specifically for motorbikes, just wondering what the differences are and is one better than the other, anyone using the MTX stuff?

Yes but seems to be unavailable here in the UK or am I missing something? Also how does it differ from the Transmax I wonder as the available Castrol spec sheets are shite and don’t tell me anything.

Okay So I have to be BLUNT right here !! You do NOT need a specific Oil!!! End OF Story!!

You need a quantity of a grade and the required specification !! That is it !

So anywhere in the range of 75 to 140 for the figures ! 75W - 90 for example! If it is a Final Drive I Prefer to use 75W-140 or something similar 85W140

The ONLY other Thing that matters is the specification! It Must be GL5!

Not GL4 ..... not GL4 / GL5 Hybrid

For 200 + or - X ccs you can buy a bottle and change every 6000 miles for a few pennies more and that is how I do it with my personal bikes

Yes I understand the spec and find it quite funny how you have to impress on people the importance of that spec, particularly that guy that for one reason or another just didn’t get it 😂 bet you were close to pulling your hair out 😆.

I’ve been using the Lucas stuff at about half the cost of the Castrol and can’t fault it, was just interested in the difference between the two Castrol oils.

I just say my bit and move on I find it sooooooooooooo funny that people can be so "Anal" about Oil

These days I mainly just say my bit and leave If someone asks another question I will answer that too

All your engine needs is nearly the correct quantity and the correct spec for the motor and try to be mechanically sympathetic and not bounce the limiter in every gear and the motor may last!!
