Gearbox and rear drive change intervals

I've always changed oils annually, but wondering why for the gearbox and rear drive. Rear wheel drive cars I've owned seem to have had sealed for life units with no specific change intervals.

Why do the boxer engine intervals need to be annual
 
Dunno, but because the oil is soooo cheap I change both of mine every year. :thumb2 Don't care if I'm daft doing it either. :D
 
I guess it gives you an opportunity to look for signs of final drive failure.
