help needed i have a 1150gs 2001 model and the clutch has gone i have stripped the bike to find the splines in the centre of the clutch have stripped but it has also taken the splines off the gearox shaft aswell is this common ? is it worth replacing the shaft or the whole box i have heard the odd horror story about the gearboxes are prone to going ? any help gratefully recieved thanks

Sorry about your predicament, you could try ringing Motorworks of Sherlock’s to price the shaft and while your at it ask them how much for a reconditioned box. That will give you a comparison and then decide, depending on whether you want to pay someone to replace the shaft, DIY it or if it’s more cost effective replace the whole gear box.

got a price for the shaft just wonderd is this a common fault or does the box go anywhere else? £140 for the shaft no prices on recon box any ideas:

It's not a "common" problem. But it happens more frequently than it should.

Is your bike a Blue and white model ? have you owned it long ?.

i'm asking out of curiosity, as not to long ago i replaced a clutch on a bike which had torn the splines out. And the gearbox input shaft was fecked. So the new clutch wasn't going to last long before the same thing happened again.

But the owner said "just put another clutch plate in it, and i'll sell it while it's running" :augie:eek:

For some reason,BWM made the clutch friction plate and gearbox input shaft so that the shaft only fitted 80ish% into the plate, causing wear.
I have recently replaced the clutch along with a 2nd hand g/box as my splines were worn as well (Y2K bike with 48K on clock).
You can get a clutch complete for about £154 from Sherlocks and a used g/box should cost about £100ish from ebay (as mentioned above).
Then all you have to is put it together.
