I'm about to pull the gearbox off my 2000 1150 and replace it with one with good splines. As the existing has stripped it's splines is it likely I'll need a new plate too? Or are the splines in the plate tougher then on the input shaft. Bikes only done 30k, so the plate shouldn't need replacing otherwise.
I know most would say replace anyway, but I'm on a budget and doing the job myself so no other cost really. And at 30k, it really should last a lot longer yet.
If it's likely to be stripped I'd rather get one in before I start as I'm hoping to get the whole job done in a weekend.

And probably an even dafter question, if I get one and don't need it, will the 1150's plate fit an 850? Cos my 850's clutch is getting closer to needing replacement, and I could just save it for that one.

Replace anyway it's to big job to save 50 pounds , and if your 850 6 speed I think it fit, check realoem.com not sure 5 speed

Change the lot it's to big of a job not to,check slave cylinder as well.good luck:thumb

The plate will probably be buggered any way
Are you fitting a replacement g/box,or stripping the damaged one?
I only ask as I can refurb your gearbox no prob!

Hello Mikey
I've got what looks like a good SH box from an 1150R, so I was just swapping it over. I guess I'm probably expecting the clutch plates splines to be shagged hence planning to have a plate on the bench ready and waiting. After that, depending on how good the box is I may choose to have the original fixed to refit later.
Dropping it up to you would be a good option as I often visit the in laws in Doncaster, so pretty much pass on the way up.

You may find, as I did once, that the clutch splines have stripped, whilst the gearbox splines are undamaged. If you are lucky!

At long last it looks like I'm finely going to get to sorting this out. My mate has booked Tuesday to come and help me, so that's the big day. I've bought a new plate, bolts and crank oil seal, just in case.
I'm hoping I'll find some time to get her up on the lift and start pulling a few bits off before Tuesday to get a head start.

Take time and take photos so that way you remember what and where it goes back

+1, lots of photo's and wee bags to put small parts and bolts with a note of where they belong. You'll also need a note of all the torque settings.

Look inside the back of the gearbox casting, the area where the swing arm pivots. Mine corroded there realy badly, all the original paint had just lifted off the alloy and there was extensive aluminium oxide. It vlooked OK at a glance but the paint wasn't actually attached to the metal any longer. I stripped it back and repainted with Hammerite special metals primer and Smoothrite silver finish which ois a good colour match. Daft not to if it's corroded and you have the box out anyway

Well we finally got to it. My mate came round mid morning just as I finished a wee job round the corner. So we set too and stripped the old box off, fitted the new plate and swapped the box for the SH one I bought a while back. It's almost back together, I'm now waiting on a new battery so I won't be fitting the tank till that's arrived. Front brakes need a service and then hopefully an mot and see how the box works.

As for the problem, the Plates splines were fubar, but the input shaft was well worn too, absolutey no grease on the splines at all, fecking unbelievable :eek:

So the new battery turned up late yesterday afternoon, and was fitted within the hour followed by tank and seats etc.
And this morning I popped over to my mot man and she passed with flying colours.
Ride over was fine, no untoward noises, bar a rattling top box, solved with a wad of tissue between box and mounting plate. The gearchange is sweater on this box than the original. Only slight concern is possibly some clutch judder at low speed when warmed up. Only time will tell if it's an issue or just needs more bedding in. Only done 40 mile so far.
Hoping to join a club ride out tomorrow for a longer run.

Added another 180mile today and all good so far. There is a hint of judder at low speed, but I'm still very pleased so far. That's apart from the rather old Tourance on the front wheel, 05 date stamp:eek:, not got a lot of confidence in it atm. Thinking about taking this one to Edinburgh next weekend, might swap the front wheel for my 850's with its Conti Trail:rolleyes:

Well I had a ball on her last weekend. I managed another couple of rides before deciding I'd take her to Edinburgh last weekend. The front tyre seems to have settled down so I left it alone for the trip.
I planned a route that kept me off the A1 all the way, passing through Lincolnshire and the Yorkshire moors and on up through County Durham, 400miles in around 8 hours with just a couple of fuel stops. The Rain started around Horncastle and didn't stop till somewhere south of Doncaster on the way home on monday:eek: But my Halvarsons kept me dry and the bike performed brilliantly, even had me thinking about keeping her and selling the 850 instead:blast.
I've ordered a new front tyre, but I seem to have upset something while washing her on Thursday. She's now running on one cylinder!! I've got sparks, but it seems no fuel to the right hand cylinder. So tomorrow I'll be having a fiddle, hopefully I've just got water somewhere it shouldn't be and has hopefully since dried out:augie. Fingers crossed:cool:

Well there I was thinking I was getting there with my 1150. I'd had a blast in Scotland and have now fitted a new front tyre, and while the front was apart I took the forks out and gave the brace a clean up and repaint as it was letting the rest of the bike down. Last job was to give the front calipers a clean up.
It seems I'm suffering from the old 'piston won't push back'. After much fighting, including popping one piston out by accident :mad:, I've now got a burst hose, seems they're shagged. So I'm now shopping for a set of new hoses. :blast:blast

So after fitting new hoses and a new front tyre I took her on a trip with a group from our IAM group to the Ardenne and Alsace regions of France. Had an absolute ball. But by the time I got home I was just over my 3k mileage allowance I'd set on the insurance, I just hadn't expected to do that much so I'd set it quite low when I renewed in Jan. Oh well, that just meant I had to accept it was time to sell her on, and yesterday I did just that. She's not gone too far, so I may bump into her occasionally. Garage is starting to look a bit empty though, having sold my cbr6, blackbird and now the GS as well as our lads GPZ since last autumn!!
And now I need to sort hoses for my 850, I've decided I'm not riding that till they're done as it's much the same age s the 1150, so fair to say they're likely to be as bad.

From what I've seen I'd suggest anyone with an 1100 or 850, and probably most 1150's, if they've not already replaced the hoses they should seriously consider doing so.
