Unfortunately my bike & manuals are in UK & I am here in Carlsberg land. I need to now what specification oil to use for the gearbox & final drive (they are the same???).

What amount is required when carrying out a service and where I can order it from so it is in the UK when I get there, I remember that last time I had problems getting hold of some "off the shelf".

Cheers
Coops.

Hi Mike,

If Carlsberg won't do, try 75W/90 gear oil for both gear box and final drive.

I usually find a reasonable selection in Halfords (or French hypermarket).

The gear box takes about 750cc and the final drive about 260cc - just enough so you need to buy 2 litres

If you order a service kit from Motobins you get the necessary crush washers.

Just to be 100% sure  , I checked the manual:

Gearbox: Hypoid Gear Oil, SAE 90, API Class GL 5, Approx. 1 litre
Filler and drain plug torque 30Nm

Final Drive: Hypoid Gear Oil, SAE 90, API Class GL 5, Approx. 0.25 litre
Filler and drain plug torque 23Nm

just be sure it's GL 5 spec - some 75W/90 gear oil is only GL 4

I have recently put castrol GL 4 in gearbox as i couldn't get any GL 5 in bike shops or bike shelves in Halfords. It is on the car oil shelves as i have found out since.I will change it again soon. Will it do any harm in the meen time ?

I telephoned Castrol Technical Department the other week for advice on Gearbox and final drive oil, they list the 1150GS down as requiring EPX 80W-90 GL5 in both the gearbox and final drive, which is probably why my local B*W dealer sells it:). It is a mineral based Hypoid extreme pressure transmission oil and suits both final drives and gearboxes.

That's the one I used in both gearbox and final drive.

I fed my 1150 with synthetic Castrol 145W-75 for both gearbox and end drive. My bike never ran smoother. A -80 oil will do as well.

Yes that's the one I use as well, Castrol Differential EPX 80W-90 GL5.
There's also a Halfords one which has got the same specs.

My BMW data lists this as an alternative to the straight SAE 90...

important thing I believe is the GL 5 spec... I did run a SMX synthetic Castrol for a while but then realised it was only GL4 and so switched back.
